Chapter 617 

On the second floor, just as Yvette was about to knock on the study door, Jeremiah opened it. 

When Jeremiah saw Yvette, he immediately took her hand and led her into the study. 

Yvette calmly let Jeremiah hold her hand, lowering her eyes to watch as his large–hand enveloped hers. Jeremiah’s hands were always warm–a warmth she loved; unlike her hands, which were always cold. 

As a child, Yvette’s body was exposed to extreme cold to control the rapidly growing ancient combat power, which caused her body temperature be much lower than normal. Even as she grew up, it remained the same. 

Jeremiah led Yvette to the couch and gently said, “Give me five minutes.” 

Yvette glanced at the computer and nodded. “Okay.” 

Her voice silenced everyone on the other side of the computer. 

Jeremiah then sat in front of the computer and quickly assigned all the tasks before ending the virtual meeting. 

In Betrico’s First Military District’s conference room, dozens of soldiers sat looking at each other, holding their breath. Nobody got up to leave, even after the virtual meeting had ended. They stayed in their seats with varied expressions, each more intriguing than the last. 

After a moment, a rugged man in military uniform coughed, breaking the silence. “Did anyone else hear a woman’s voice on the conference call with General just now?” he asked. 

As soon as he asked this, the conference room–enveloped in pin–drop silence earlier–erupted into a lively discussion. 

In truth, these soldiers weren’t gossipmongers. The military district had a hectic schedule daily, leaving them hardly any time for personal dramas. 

However, the focus of this gossip was Jeremiah–a man known for being tough and distant, whom women dared not approach. 

Another man in uniform loudly declared, “Yes, we all heard a woman’s voice. General’s got a girlfriend! So, those rumors were true?” The soldiers sitting next to him were nearly deafened by his booming voice. 

“Bjorn, stop shouting! We’re not in boot camp. Are you trying to make us deaf?” grumbled one of them. 

“Yeah, seriously. Can you tone your voice down a bit? I wonder how your wife puts up with it. So what if General’s got a girlfriend? He’s such an incredible guy; his girlfriend has to be great, too, right? I heard she’s from Seacrity,” piped up another. 

“Seacrity’s a great place. I used to take the recruits there for training back in the day, but it’s been over ten years since Hast visited,” commented someone. 

“You’re still reminiscing while we’re wondering if the General’s prolonged absence from the military district is because of his girlfriend. Who’d have thought he’d ever take a leave for a woman? It’s quite shocking, teased another. 

Another soldier sighed. “But to be fair, General needs a break, even if it’s not just for his girlfriend. It’s been so many years. We get to go home to our wives and kids during the holidays, but General’s either been in the military district or on missions all year round.” 

Now that he’s got a girlfriend, it’s high time he takes a well–deserved break for a romantic time together,” he added. 

“That’s true. Let’s finish our tasks before General returns at the end of next month. Then, we can prepare for next year’s World Military Championship,” agreed someone.

Except for the few times Jeremiah participated and took first, their rankings in recent years had been underwhelming. If next year’s results were mediocre again, it could seriously impact the First Military District’s morale. 

Back in Mysonna, after ending the video call, Jeremiah walked over to the couch and sat beside Yvette, who was already curled up on the couch, resting her chin on her hand and playing on her phone. 

Seeing Jeremiah’s action, Yvette glanced at him and raised an eyebrow. ‘Does he have to sit so close to me? The couch has plenty of space,’ she wondered. 

Jeremiah pretended not to notice her stare and calmly started peeling an apple. “What’s up with Emmett?” he asked. 

Hearing this, Yvette put down her phone, leaned back, and answered softly, “Emmett has a thing for Alice.” 

Jeremiah’s hand paused momentarily, disrupting his peeling of the apple. 

After a couple of seconds, Jeremiah continued to peel the apple carefully, his eyes unfathomable as he probed, “Demetrius‘ sister?” 

Yvette raised an eyebrow and nodded casually. 

Jeremiah handed the peeled apple to Yvette, who ‘took a bite. She found it sweet and continued eating eagerly. 

Jeremiah watched as Yvette’s cheeks puffed up while she ate the apple, making him want to reach out and pinch them. However, to keep his hands safe from Yvette possibly twisting them, he dismissed the idea. Pinching Yvette’s face was off- limits. 

After Yvette finished eating one apple, she craved another and glanced at another apple on the table. She swung her feet and tilted her head, looking at Jeremiah. “You’re good at peeling apples,” she remarked. 

After saying that, she just stared at Jeremiah’s face without saying anything else. 

A hint of amusement flashed in Jeremiah’s eyes at her words. He casually replied, “I’m not too bad, I suppose. Thanks for the compliment.” However, he didn’t even glance at the last apple on the table. 

Yvette nestled on the couch, turned her head slightly, and gazed at Jeremiah’s serene face. After a while, she took another look at the apple on the table and stayed silent for a few seconds 

Finally, squinting her eyes and lifting her chin a bit, she casually nudged Jeremiah’s leg with her foot and drawled, “Since I said you’re good at peeling, shouldn’t you prove it by peeling another apple?” 

Jeremiah smirked mischievously as a playful light shone in his eyes. ‘Yvette’s really putting in some effort just for an apple. A for effort, but I think I can push her a bit more,‘ he mused. 

Jeremiah looked at Yvette, picked up the knife he was holding, and gave it a small wave. He suggested provocatively, “I could prove myself in another way.” 

A minute later, Yvette looked on as Jeremiah, who had pulled her into his arm after saying he would prove himself, showed her how to peel an apple by holding her hand and doing it.
