Brielle had just set down a glass of warm milk King brought her. But in a flash of anger, she splashed it right across his face, her body trembling with fury.
“Get out.”
King’s cheek still bore the imprint of her slap, and now drenched in milk, he felt a sting of injustice.
Had he said something wrong?
Max had kept secrets from her, secrets that led her to harm herself. King felt she deserved to know the truth, no matter how bitter.
Brielle’s grip on the glass tightened, her face flushing with rage.
King’s patience began to wear thin as he stood up. “I wasn’t wrong. You lost the baby because of this. You see, when you’re with him, he keeps everything from you.”
He believed he was the better man, open and honest with her. Yet, she never seemed to appreciate it. King was at a loss for what he'd done wrong.
Brielle’s head buzzed with anger, recalling the hurtful events from the night before. Now, King was deliberately reopening her wounds. Was he taunting her because he had a child, a beautiful little boy, while she and Max had lost theirs?
Taking a deep breath, she tried to suppress the discomfort in her body.
“Are you happy my child is gone?”
King’s lips tightened. He wasn't exactly happy, knowing it was Brielle who suffered. However, the thought of her bearing Max’s child unsettled him. In his mind, that child should never have existed. Its natural loss seemed like a mercy to everyone involved.
“Somewhat happy, I guess.”
This time, not only milk but the glass itself was hurled toward him.
King dodged, the glass grazing his cheek before shattering against the wall.
“Get out!”
Brielle’s emotions surged, a wave of pain and nausea hitting her.
King stood still, noticing her pallor, regretting his words.
“Brielle, are you alright?”
Attempting to stand, Brielle’s face drained of color.
King moved to support her but was pushed away.
