The train car fell into an eerie silence after Aubree spoke, as if even the bustling traffic outside had paused to listen. She felt herself enveloped in a careful embrace, treated as delicately as a fragile treasure.
"I'm sorry." It wasn't his first apology.
Aubree merely blinked, too exhausted to respond. All she wanted was to sleep.
Back at the mansion, Brielle was buried in her thesis, glued to her laptop day and night. King worried she'd realize something was off—like the fact she had already graduated and couldn't remember her original thesis topic. Yet, to his surprise, Brielle remembered everything.
She sat on the newly replaced couch in the living room, her fingers flying over the keyboard, emitting a clear 'do not disturb' vibe. King, having nothing to do with her busy hands, simply watched her, finding immense satisfaction in just being in her presence.
Brielle sensed his gaze, a fleeting smile tugging at her lips, though her expression remained cool. "Don't you have something better to do? Aren't there Dorsey International files that need your attention?"
King, ever so oblivious, missed the hidden smile and felt his spirits drop. "Dorsey International is bankrupt."
Brielle's fingers froze mid-type, her eyes wide with disbelief. "What did you say?"
His tone was unexpectedly calm. "Dorsey International has gone under. I'm not its CEO anymore."
Brielle felt as if struck by lightning, wondering if he was joking. A quick search revealed that Dorsey International had indeed been acquired by a company named DreamTech Designs. Unaware that DreamTech Designs was Max's venture, she felt a guilty surge of relief.
King stiffened, disbelief coursing through him. Brielle eyed him seriously. "Isn't Premier Palace still unfurnished? Did you sell it?"
Given its ties to the Dorsey family, he had sold it to buy this place, not wanting her to feel burdened. "Yeah, I didn't want you feeling uncomfortable there."
His gaze was intense, as if trying to draw her in. Brielle's smile returned, yet a question lingered. "Have you applied for jobs?"
King hadn't expected her to take him seriously. She used to be so easy to fool. "Of course, but you know, after running such a big company, when it went down, everyone wanted a piece. Those who once called me 'brother' stabbed me in the back. Joining their companies would just kill me, so I'd rather not work and just stay at home."
That was just like him, preferring to starve at home than work for a rival and give them the satisfaction.
