King finally figured out Max's game plan. Out of nowhere, Max took control of his body, only to leave him with the aftermath once the thrill was over.
Guilt washed over King instantly.
Wrapped in a comforter, Brielle looked utterly exhausted, her voice hoarse from the ordeal.
"Where did all that stuff come from?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
King, feeling guilty, couldn't bring himself to meet her gaze. "I, uh, bought them," he mumbled.
"Just get rid of it. All of it," she demanded.
The memory of Max's ruthless determination sent a shiver down her spine. She couldn't survive another round like that.
King sprang to his feet. Get rid of them?
No way. He had meticulously selected those items, and even though Max, that sneaky bastard, got to use a set first, it didn't matter. He had prepared over fifty sets.
King started to sulk.
"You don't actually like me, do you? You wake up and immediately snap at me. Max barely has to say two words to make you blush. You say we're the same person, but you've always treated me differently. I get it now. I'll just leave."
Seeing the look of defeat on his face tugged at Brielle's heartstrings.
"I didn't mean that."
King's eyes instantly reddened, and he silently turned away.
"Then what is it? Are you saying you don't treat us differently? You practically idolize Max, and with me, it's like I'm just another guy?"
Is it because Max is the strong, silent type?
Fine, I'll just stop talking then. How about that?
Brielle panicked, reaching out to grab his hand.
"Don't be like that. That's not what I meant."
The sight of him feeling so down was too much for her, and she hastily made a promise.
"Let's not throw anything away. Just keep it."
A glimmer of hope flashed in King's eyes, his lips curving into a smile.
"Really? You'll keep it? Don't force yourself."
"I'm not, I'm really not."
Brielle, weary from the past few days of little sleep and now full from breakfast, slowly closed her eyes, her head nodding off.
"My back hurts."
King's hands moved to her back, amused as she stretched out comfortably.
"Why don't you ever say no to him?"
"I've missed him. I'd miss you too if I hadn't seen you in a long time."
Her words were slow, weighed down by sleepiness.
King's fingers paused, and he looked down, whispering, "Really?"
But she was already asleep.
Her sweet nothings sounded lovely.
And he believed them, even found them endearing.
He gently continued the massage, feeling content with just that promise.
