Noticing Ruby glaring daggers at her, Kailee quickly latched onto Lewis's arm. "Oh, come on, don't be mad. Let's talk this out," she suggested, opening her car door and nudging him inside.
Their colleagues weren't far off, watching the drama unfold. When Lewis slid into her car, a colleague with golden locks started whistling, making Ruby fume with anger as she stomped over. She couldn't believe Lewis would actually go for someone like Kailee!
Seeing Ruby approach and fearing Lewis might bolt, Kailee pressed him down into the seat. Lewis instinctively wrapped an arm around her waist, but Kailee, always so carefree, didn't notice. Her focus was on Ruby, who was now reaching for the car door.
To show off how close she was with Lewis, Kailee scooted even closer to him, making his breath catch and his eyes widen. When Ruby managed to yank the door open and saw them, her face turned beet red with anger. "Kailee, why are you sitting on Kenzo's lap?"
With her back to Ruby, Kailee rolled her eyes. A woman sitting on a man's lap could only mean one thing—they were an item. But Ruby seemed clueless by asking. Still, Kailee couldn't just blurt out the truth, especially with Lewis right there. If her fib got exposed, she'd be mortified.
Worried Lewis might spill the beans, she pinched the back of his neck. Lewis tensed, realizing he still hadn't learned to keep his distance from women. Ruby locked eyes with Lewis and felt a shiver from his intense gaze. She quickly shut the car door and scurried away.
Kailee heard the door close and brightened up, ready to get out, but something was poking her. "Lewis, what do you have in your pocket?" she asked, glancing down at him, only to meet his deep gaze, which made her heart skip a beat. Suddenly feeling shy, she looked away and shifted back.
"Kailee," he called softly. Feeling her scalp tingle, Kailee realized there was no need to stay so close now that Ruby was gone. She swallowed nervously, "Yes? What's up?"
Lewis held her waist firmly, not letting go. "Ever been with any other guys?" he asked.
Lewis felt terrible, sweat breaking out on his forehead. "Kailee," he whispered softly.
Kailee was crying miserably, hating the pain more than anything. "You can leave. I don't want this," she sobbed, trying to push him away.
Lewis knew he’d been wrong, taking advantage of her distraction like that. But given her innocence, he thought it better she be with him than fall for someone else's lies. "It'll feel better soon," he assured her gently.
"Really?" she asked through her tears, her voice small and uncertain.
