They say you reap what you sow, and Everett was feeling it hard. Clutching his chest, he wore a dramatic pout. “Selena, this time it really hurts. I'm heartbroken…”
Selena’s lips curled into the tiniest hint of a smile, though she kept her expression purposely icy. “You better take care of yourself. If you don’t bounce back soon, I might just meet some young, strong heartthrob, fall head over heels, and have a whirlwind wedding.”
“After all, Mr. Everett... you’re not getting any younger and might not be the prime husband material.”
“You...”
Everett was frustrated, his lips moving but failing to form any sharp retort. What if he said something rash and scared her off again?
Plus, with Selena’s quick wit, he’d never win a verbal sparring match.
With that in mind, there was only one thing left to do.
In a swift move, Everett grabbed her shoulders and eased her onto the soft mattress, being careful of her abdomen. He leaned down, silencing her with a kiss that was both tender and infuriating.
Selena, wary of his injury, didn’t resist much. Under his persistence, she gradually relaxed, letting him have his way.
At the door, Ava stifled a giggle, gently closing it with a smile.
Turning to the little ones, she fibbed effortlessly, “Mateo, Haley, your mom and dad are resting. Let’s not bother them. We’ll check in on Dad tomorrow.”
Mateo tilted his head. “Can I just sneak a peek?”
Ava shook her head. “Ava will bring you back tomorrow, okay? Daddy might get upset if you go in now.”
Mateo looked puzzled, but Ava simply grinned, taking Mateo’s hand and scooping up Haley as they walked away.
