Skylar left work early that afternoon and took the subway to the Martin Group. Once she arrived, she 

called Joe. 

She expected him not to answer, but after a few rings, his voice came through. “What do you need?” 

Skylar paused for a moment before saying, “I’m downstairs at your company. Let’s go get dinner after you finish work.” 

Joe replied decisively, “Sure.” 

After hanging up, Skylar stared at her phone in disbelief. She hadn’t expected Joe to agree so readily. The ease of the conversation left her feeling a bit dazed, a sensation that lingered until they arrived at the Wiscadian restaurant. 

At the restaurant, Joe ordered her favorite dishes. While he was ordering, he suddenly said, “If you have something to say, just say it.” 

Skylar took a sip of water, setting her glass down as she looked up at him.” 

Before she could speak, Joe fixed his sharp gaze on her and asked, “Have you really made up your mind about wanting a divorce?” t 

Skylar felt as though her throat was being constricted, making it hard to breathe. With difficulty, she managed to say, “Yes.” 

“Since you’re sure, set a time for us to go to the courthouse,” Joe said, his tone firm. He showed no sign of the resistance they had during their earlier conversation about divorce. 

A heavy weight settled in Skylar’s chest. She replied in a low voice, “Alright, let’s do it tomorrow. We’ll meet at the courthouse at 9:00 am.” 

Joe tightened his grip on the cup in his hand, causing the water inside to ripple. Watching Skylar nod without hesitation, eagerly setting their divorce for tomorrow morning, he finally realized that this woman in front of him was truly intent on leaving him. 

Last night, her repeated pleas for a divorce in her dreams hit him like a series of blows, leaving him painfully clear–headed. 

“Is it really that urgent?” he asked, a sardonic smile playing on his lips. 

Skylar nodded and replied simply, “Since we’ve decided to divorce, it’s better for both of us to get the divorce decree as soon as possible. As for Grandma, she’s not well lately, so let’s keep this from her. I’ll make sure to visit her often.” 

After their divorce, if Joe wanted to be with Vera, having Skylar out of the picture would only simplify things. 

“You’ve even thought about how to face Grandma after the divorce? When did you start planning this? Was it before your trip to Fachington?” Joe asked with a sarcastic laugh.
