Truly, fate worked in mysterious ways.
The car sped off, and soon the girl’s face had vanished from view, lost in the sprawling vastness of the city.
Jasper closed his eyes to rest awhile.
Soon, the car arrived at the police station, and he got out.
His private mercenaries were waiting to report the situation to him, “Frank Hughes came to personally declare that Edith Price has been officially absolved of all wrongdoing related to those misplaced fashion designs. He even signed a hardcopy declaration, in order to secure her release from prison. We had no choice but to comply: Edith Price has been freed.”
Frank Hughes. Jasper’s grandfather.
A celebrated war hero, now retired from service. Though he was a civilian homebody now, he retained his vast prestige and connections. Even Jasper himself had to show deference to him, to say nothing of grunts like them.
In any case, this was fundamentally an internal affair of Hughes Corporation, so if the head of the Hughes family extended a full pardon to Edith, and dropped all charges against her, then the matter was no longer within the jurisdiction of the police.
If Frank Hughes said Edith Price was to be released, that was all there was to it.
Jasper hadn’t expected his grandfather to get involved in this matter with Edith. Now that he’d heard the specifics, he spent a moment deep in thought, then said, “If that’s what he wants, then we’ll abide by his wishes.”
In the first place, Jasper had organized that whole fashion show just so Frank could pick out a designer dress to give to Cindy. With that in mind, if the old man didn’t have a problem with what happened, then there was no problem.
Outside the police station, Jasper made a phone call to Frank. His voice low and menacing, he said, “This is the last time.” And then he hung up.
At the other end of the line, Frank opened his mouth to speak, only to hear the abrupt tone of the call being ended. He frowned deeply.
Had Jasper just threatened him?!
The boy had never once taken such a tone with him before! Ever since that Willow Nason appeared in his life, Jasper had only been getting worse and worse!
