Chapter 377
Esther, still weak, leaned against the wall to walk out. She saw Felix about to call Bradley and grabbed the phone from him without a second thought.
“Mommy…” Felix and Sunshine called out, concerned as they looked at Esther’s distressed face.
Esther tightly held the phone and glared at Felix. “Felix, didn’t you promise me you’d never call him again?”
“But Mommy… Daddy’s… He’s…” Felix couldn’t understand why his father would bully his mother this far.
‘Shouldn’t Daddy be protecting Mommy?’ he thought.
“Mommy, why would Felix’s Daddy bully you?” Sunshine asked, her heart breaking at the sight of Esther’s sadness. She grabbed her hand and gently asked, “Is it because he doesn’t love you?”
“Love?” Esther muttered. An unconcealable tinge of sadness filled her expression.
‘That’s right,’ she thought. ‘He doesn’t love me. Everything he’s done in the past was because he doesn’t love me.’
Esther said, “You’re both still children, so you wouldn’t understand something this complicated yet.”
As a mother, she didn’t want Felix involved in adult strife. If she brought him into her world. without his permission, she would never be able to give him the childhood he deserved. In fact, she would cast him into a never-ending abyss of trauma.
“Mommy, I’m not a child. I’m a little man now, so I’ll protect you,” Felix proclaimed.
Felix’s eyes were red with anger. He had listened to the voice recording and knew that his father wanted his mother to beg for mercy.
‘Mommy hasn’t done anything wrong, so why should she have to beg him for anything?’ he wondered.
“You’re such a wonderful son, Felix,” Esther said.
Esther held Felix and Sunshine’s hands. “I’m so glad you want to protect me,” she said. “But I can take care of myself, and I want you to take care of yourselves, too. My only wish is for you to eat well, grow up strong, and be able to protect yourselves.”
“But Mommy, Daddy’s bullying you…” Felix said, his voice childishly fierce.
“Felix, I’m feeling a little unwell at the moment. Could you be a good boy and let me rest for a while?” Esther asked.
She felt both sour and bitter inside when she heard what Felix said.
‘He already knows Bradley’s bullying me despite his age. Does Bradley really not know it?’ she wondered.
‘No,’ she thought. ‘He knows… He just doesn’t care! He doesn’t care about anything that
happens to me. He doesn’t care about my feelings, he doesn’t care about my innocence, nor does he care what kind of harm his actions will do to my life.’
