Maximus, Diana, and Adele arrived home. Little Adele was completely exhausted—her day out had been long and tiring. For Maximus, spending time with his granddaughter filled his heart and eased the anxiety of what was coming.
Laura heard her father arrive and immediately left her room to see him.
“Dad?” Laura asked as she stepped into Adele’s room.
“My girl, we thought you were already asleep, so we didn’t want to wake you. We just brought Adele straight to her room.”
“Don’t worry, it’s fine. She can stay here—she’s too deep asleep to move her again. I’ll just take the monitor.”
“How did things go with that guy?”
“Good…”
“Laura…”
“What is it, Dad?”
“I know you, and I know that ‘good’ means a lot of things. I just want you to know that if you decide to forgive him and get back together, I wouldn’t be angry. But even so, I’d still want to talk to him.”
“Dad, what makes you think that? I don’t want to, and I’m not even considering getting back with him. It’s just that things got a little out of hand…”
“What do you mean? What happened?”
“Well… let’s just say I might have upset someone…” Laura said, looking down at the floor.
“What happened, Laura?”
“Come to the kitchen. I’ll tell you everything while I make you some coffee—just the way you like it,” Laura said with a smile.
“Alright, let’s go. But this sounds like a bribe… and you know it, don’t you?”
“Of course not… I just prefer to tell you everything while you’re relaxed.”
“Laura…”
“Come on, let’s go!” she said, grabbing the monitor as they left the room.
Laura had a knot in her stomach. She would have preferred not to say anything about what had happened, but she knew Alice probably wouldn’t let the matter rest. She had spent the evening thinking about it and decided it was better for her father not to be caught off guard. So, she had made up her mind—she would only tell him about today’s incident.
