Chapter 0141
Maximus arrived in Valeria and went straight to see Alexia. He knew it wouldn’t be easy to face her anger, but he hadn’t expected to find her in loose clothing, her eyes and nose red from crying. When his gaze fell on her swollen belly, he felt like the most miserable man alive. She was the mother of his unborn child, and she had endured the most critical phase of her pregnancy alone. Once again, she was by herself.
“Alexia…” he said, opening the door and pulling her into his arms.
“Go away! Leave me alone! My baby and I don’t need you!” Alexia shouted, struggling against his
embrace.
“I’m so sorry I didn’t come back with you. I truly am! I promise I won’t leave you again. Please, stop crying,” Maximus said, guilt weighing heavily in his voice.
“Maximus, I know you don’t want us. If you’re here, it’s out of obligation. This baby doesn’t deserve a family like this. I can raise them alone–we don’t need you!” Alexia snapped, letting out what she had kept bottled up for so long.
“Alexia, that’s not true! I really do want to be with you both. It’s just… I don’t know how to do it. My life has changed so much since I found out I’d be a father. You’re not the only one going through changes- I’m overwhelmed with emotions I don’t even know how to explain.”
“Maximus…” Alexia whispered, surprised to see tears streaming down his face.
“My father wasn’t always present, but he was still an amazing father. I don’t know if I’ll ever measure up to that. I don’t even know if I can be a good father. But with you by my side, I really want to try.”
“I don’t know if I believe you anymore. Sometimes, I think you’re still in love with your ex,” Alexia said, searching his deep blue eyes for the truth.
Maximus didn’t flinch or react. Instead, he embraced her again, silently conveying his resolve.
“Maximus, I’ve dreamed for years of a wedding, a life by your side, a family. But you’ve never given me that. Why should I believe it’ll be different now? Because of the baby? Tell me…” Alexia’s voice cracked as she questioned him.
“I’ve loved you since I was sixteen, Alexia. I’ve never stopped loving you. And I want to build a family with you,” Maximus said, pulling a small black box from his jacket pocket.
Alexia’s eyes widened when she saw what was inside.
“Maximus, is this…?” she asked, her voice trembling.
“Yes, Alexia. Will you marry me?” Maximus asked, taking the exquisite diamond ring from the box and slipping it onto her left ring finger.
A radiant smile spread across Alexia’s face as she hugged him tightly, her answer clear.
“Do you accept being Mrs. Maximus Palmer?” he asked, his tone soft but steady.
“Yes! Yes, I do!” Alexia cried, wiping away her tears.
