“Mary, are you awake? Can I come in?” a deep voice called out.
She turned around. It was Maximus’s voice. She regretted still being in her pajamas and walked over to answer the door.
“Hi, Maximus!” she said as she opened the door.
“Hello! I have this for you. My grandmother said it’s your birthday!”
“Thank you!” she replied, her eyes widening and a huge smile spreading across her face. “Yes, today’s my 18th birthday. My grandfather sent me a letter.”
“Do you want to go out for a walk?”

Once in the car, Maximus started driving until they reached the edge of the sea. Matthew had recommended several places, but they all seemed a bit too extravagant for Mary. She was a young girl, and she probably just wanted to enjoy the fresh air and maybe some street food.
“Sorry, I don’t have anything better planned. Grandma just told me today.”
“Don’t worry. Just being with you today is enough for me,” Mary said without thinking, not hiding her attraction to him.
“Really?” Maximus responded, realizing what she meant.
“Of course! I had imagined today differently, but you’ve made my day brighter.”
“But I’ve only taken you for a walk.”
“Last year, my grandfather and I made a plan. When I turned 18, we’d steal money from the family and run away to explore the country. We’d visit towns, eat street food, go to the beach to snorkel, and do so many
