Chapter 0157
[Back to the present]
Marcus Bartz stood at the base of the towering Palmer Group building, his sharp gaze taking in its Impressive height.
“All the things we’ve endured because of this damned place,” Marcus muttered to Frederick, who stood by his side.
Frederick, ever loyal, nodded solemnly and replied, “Mr. Bartz, are you ready to take your place on the board?”
“Ready? No. Anxious? Absolutely,” Marcus answered, a cold, calculated smile playing on his lips.
The man who was a loving husband and father at home had transformed into someone else entirely. Here, outside the Palmer empire, he was a predator. His heart burned with vengeance, but his hands would remain clean. His strategy was clear: let them destroy themselves from the inside. His return and integration into the company were merely a means to move the chess pieces at his leisure.
Years ago, Marcus had injected significant capital into the company during a financial crisis, making him the largest stakeholder, even more so than Maximus Palmer himself. Maximus was nothing more than a figurehead, a pretty face for the company. The real power lay with Marcus.
“Mr. Bartz…” a calm, raspy voice called out.
Marcus turned to see an older Matthew Rice, the man who had devoted his life to serving the Palmer family. When Peter died, Leonardo Palmer had fallen into a deep depression. For six months, it was Matthew who had kept the company afloat. Eventually, Catherine Palmer had made the decision to hand. control back to Maximus, though it had proven to be one of her worst decisions. Under Alexia’s manipulative influence, Maximus brought Frank Levert back as his right hand, pushing Matthew into semi–retirement. Matthew had since focused on caring for Leonardo, who had ultimately retreated to Nepal.
“Mr. Rice! What a pleasure to see you here. Do you still work at this place?” Marcus greeted cheerfully.
“No, just as a consultant from time to time,” Matthew replied, his tone steady.
“I’m glad someone like you is still guiding this great company,” Marcus said, placing a firm hand on Matthew’s shoulder.
“It’s been many years. I never thought you’d step foot here again. What brings you back?” Matthew asked, his curiosity piqued.
“I’ve returned to Valentia, Matthew. My family wants to connect with our roots, and I couldn’t deny them the chance. And seeing you reminds me–1 never had the opportunity to thank you for your excellent stewardship of this company and our shares, also know you interceded to ensure Peter’s ashes were moved where he wanted. Thank you for that.”
“No thanks are needed, sir. Peter was like a son to me when he was a boy. Losing him was devastating, but honoring his last wishes was the least I could do, even if it hurt others. As for the company, it was my job, and frankly, working with you was never difficult. You’re a man of your word and understand business. Even from a distance, we always found ways to reach agreements that benefitted everyone.”

Chapter 0157
The two men conversed amicably until Marcus glanced at his watch.
“Matthew, I hope we can have coffee sometime after the meeting. I need to go over some matters concerning Peter. But for now, we should head in–I have a meeting with Maximus.”
“I know. He invited me as well,” Matthew replied.
“Ah, I see. He wants you to mediate. Clever. Not surprising, though. Let’s see how this goes. Just don’t be too hard on me, will you?” Marcus joked with mock innocence.
“I’ll try, but if you plan to attack Mr. Palmer, I won’t go easy on you.”
“Let’s go, my
dear Matthew. Let’s not keep the illustrious Mr. Palmer waiting,” Marcus said sarcastically, a cynical smile gracing his face.
The group
entered the building, immediately drawing the attention of employees. It wasn’t unusual to see two or three people arrive together, but Marcus had brought an entourage of a dozen bodyguards. He believed in being cautious–especially when about to declare war on Maximus Palmer.
“Sofia, dear,” Matthew addressed the receptionist. “Please inform Mr. Palmer that Mr. Bartz has arrived, and we’ll be heading to the boardroom shortly.”
“Yes, Mr. Rice. Will everyone be going up:
