Mary walked ahead and entered the quaint shop filled with cakes of various flavors. The attendant promptly approached her with a warm smile.
“Hello, Miss! Would you like some cake, or will you be heading to the café?”
“Hmmm…” Mary turned to the man beside her for guidance.
“We’ll head to the café,” he responded.
“Great! Would you like to sit inside? Or we have a small terrace out back with tables as well.”
“The terrace!” Mary exclaimed enthusiastically.
“Alright! Follow me, please,” the girl said, gesturing with her hand to lead the way.
As they walked towards the terrace, they passed through a white corridor inside the small bakery, adorned with paintings of various cakes done in oil. There were a few small tables with vases of English roses. The place left Mary fascinated, she admired it as if fate had granted her a glimpse of heaven.
Maximus, on the other hand, felt slightly out of place amidst so much sweetness, but he made no comment. Finally, they reached the terrace and saw a small arm of a river that flowed into the sea. It was truly a sight to behold–a small garden full of flowers, making it a very romantic spot. Mary imagined that this place must look incredible at night.
For a moment, she lost herself in the idea that she and Maximus could visit it one day and have a romantic date. Her daydream was interrupted when Maximus playfully pinched her nose.
“The lady wants to know what you’d like,” he said while looking over the menu.
“Oh! I’d like a strawberry cake with a cup of black coffee, please.”
“Certainly! And for you, sir?” The attendant, who thought Maximus was one of the most handsome men she had ever seen, asked him. This girl sure is lucky,‘ she thought to herself.
“I’ll have a double espresso,” he replied, handing the menu back.
“I’ll be back with your order in a moment.”
With nothing else to do, the waitress left them alone. It was 1:00 p.m., so the café was relatively quiet, and the terrace was empty.
“It’s a lovely place, isn’t it?” Mary remarked.
“You like it?”
“Of course! Don’t you? It’s a great place for a romantic date!”
I
suppose so. If you like it, I can’t disagree,” he said, sounding slightly resigned.
She was so excited that she didn’t catch what he was implying with his comments.
“My friend Regina would love this place. She and I really enjoyed things like this.
“What things?”

“Eating cake and lots of other fattening foodal But we also loved places like this. It reminds me of a little café we used to visit when I could neak away from my father.”
“You didn’t go out much?”
“Not really. My father is very strict and hardly ever let me befriend just anyone. To him, Regina was the worst influence I could have. But I always admired her
“Why?” he asked with curiosity.
