Marcus drove through the rainy streets, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel, while he called Frederick. He needed an update on Mary–needed to know if she had been found. The memory of their earlier interaction replayed in his mind, filling him with guilt. He cursed his cold, dismissive attitude, realizing that his inability to address things with compassion had pushed her to this point.
Frederick, still trailing Theodore at the time, felt his phone buzz. His chest tightened–there was a 50% chance this wasn’t Marcus but someone more dangerous. He glanced at the screen and answered quickly.
“Frederick! What happened? Did you find her?”
“Yes, sir! I convinced her to board a flight to anywhere, just to leave the country.” Frederick exhaled with relief, hoping this would ease his boss’s worry.
“What?” Marcus roared. “Why would you do that?”
“Sir, Levett’s men passed right by her. I couldn’t risk her being caught. We can find her later–right now, the priority is getting her to safety.”
“Frederick, the plan was to bring her with us! Now we have no way of tracking her.” Marcus’s voice softened, tinged with worry. “Talk to airport security. She can’t board a plane!”
“I’ll take care of it, sir. Are you alright? Is everything under control on your end?”
“I’m fine,” Marcus lied, eyeing the dried blood on his hands. “Find her, Frederick.”
“Yes, sir.”
Frederick turned his car around, letting Theodore slip from his sight. He rushed back to the airport and demanded a meeting with the director of security. Frederick’s name carried weight, and the staff wasted, no time pulling up the security footage.
What followed was an agonizing search through countless camera angles, each frame bringing him closer to panic. Finally, he spotted her: Mary, her small frame moving quickly through the terminal. Frederick bolted from the security room, sprinting toward the gates.
But he was too late. By the time he reached her gate, the plane was already in the air.
Frustrated, Frederick stormed to the ticket counter to gather information on the flight she’d taken. To his relief, he learned it was headed to Hesperia.
Mary was a bundle of nerves as she moved through the airport. The way Frederick had ushered her in, with an urgency that mirrored her own fears, confirmed what she already suspected: she was in danger. She spotted a flight leaving for Hesperia in 30 minutes with a handful of available seats. Without hesitation, she pulled out the black credit card Peter had given her years ago.
“For you, my love, this will be the only time I use it,” she whispered under her breath, her heart heavy. After paying for her ticket, she moved cautiously, staying close to large groups of travelers. She didn’t know who to trust or what lay ahead, but her instincts screamed at her to disappear. she discarded the credit card and her phone, severing the last ties to her old life.
When the boarding announcement came, she joined the line immediately, her small hand gripping her belly protectively. As she settled into her seat, rain streaked the airplane windows. The storm outside mirrored her inner turmoil. Tears burned at the back of her eyes, but she swallowed them down.
The plane ascended, carrying Mary away from Valentia and the chaos of the Palmer and Levett families.
At the airport, Frederick knew he couldn’t stop the flight now. Frustrated, he called Marcus.
“Sir, she’s on a plane to Hesperia,” Frederick said, his voice strained. “We need to move quickly. We can get to Hesperia before she lands if we leave now.”
Marcus closed his eyes, exhaling slowly. “I’m on my way. Meet me back at the house to grab our things.”
At the Central Hospital in Galea, Frank Levett winced in pain as his friend, Dr. Spencer, dressed the gruesome wounds Marcus had inflicted. The judge’s face was pale, and his breathing was labored–not from blood loss alone but from fear.
“Spencer, my friend,” Frank whispered hoarsely. “Bartz is alive. And as long as he is, we’re all in danger.”
“I know,” Spencer replied grimly. “You’ve been busy playing the untouchable judge, but you’ve missed the bigger picture. Many of us are already on his hit list.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Frank demanded, his voice shaking,
“Have you not been watching the news?” Spencer leaned closer, his tone conspiratorial. “Several of us involved in… well, you know… have vanished. Their bodies have been found in pieces, families destroyed. He’s already started his revenge.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Frank growled, panic overtaking his anger.

“Because you don’t let anyone like us near you unless it’s life or death. Now here you are desperate for my help. If it weren’t for that knife in your hand, I wouldn’t be seeing you at all.”
Frank clenched his jaw, both humbled and infuriated. He reached for his phone with his uninjured hand and called Theodore.
Frederick and Marcus reconvened at Peter’s estate, gathering their belongings. Marcus’s hands were still stained with Frank’s blood, though Agnes didn’t realize it until she approached him.
“Mr. Bartz! What happened? Let me clean your wounds!” she exclaimed.
