From the day Valerie started dating Marcus, her life began to change. This man stopped working late, except when it was truly urgent, though in the 15 days they’d been together, that hadn’t been necessary. 

Marcus made a point of sticking to office hours, mostly because he wanted to spend time with Valerie. She had to admit, she’d never experienced anything like this before. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word- opening the car door for her, holding her hand confidently as they strolled, always ensuring she walked on the safer side of the sidewalk. He took her out for dinners, starting with fancy restaurants, but after Valerie said she preferred something simpler, they began visiting cozy cafés she chose herself. 

Marcus, on his end, enjoyed Valerie’s company and loved indulging her small whims–usually desserts or evening walks in Century Park. The forest in a park had become her favorite place during her time alone, and he appreciated that she now wanted to share it with him. Because of that, he never said no to those nightly walks, sometimes just the two of them, other times with Serenity. 

At the office, there were whispers about their relationship, Marcus neither confirmed nor denied anything, per Valerie’s request. She didn’t want colleagues to feel there was favoritism because she was close to the boss. Officially, she was still his subordinate and wanted to avoid any special treatment. If it were up to Marcus, he’d have already shouted to the world that they were together and that she was the love of his life. But he respected her wishes and went at her pace. 

On one of their dates, Marcus took her to the observation deck of the Mirror Tower. He had reserved the entire space for just the two of them, ensuring they wouldn’t be disturbed. They dined and sipped wine, and she admired the city view while he embraced her from behind. 

“Valerie… You’ve brought peace back into my life,” he said softly. “My heart feels calm; you’re my light. These days with you have slipped through my fingers like water. Before we were together, I was just drifting, the only thing keeping me grounded was Serenity. But now, I feel complete. I don’t need or want anything else.” 

Marcus gently turned her toward him and kissed her a kiss full of love and tranquility. 

Two weeks flew by. It was just another Monday, and Valerie was in Marcus’s office when she stepped out to find Frederick. Before she could reach him, a call from reception stopped her. The receptionist, a new hire, didn’t know everyone who occasionally came by for Marcus or Frederick, so she had called Valerie directly. 

“Valerie, there’s a Miss Olsen here to see Mr. Bartz. Should announce her?” the receptionist asked hesitantly. She says she knows him, but I don’t recognize her.” 

Hearing that name sent a pang through Valerie’s stomach. She’d once suspected Marcus had been seeing that stunning woman, though it had been a while since she’d shown up at the company. Valerie had assumed the relationship had fizzled out. If they weren’t together anymore, then why was she here? 

“Valerie? Are you there?” 

“Oh! Yes, of course. You can announce her,” Valerie replied, her voice trembling. “Actually, I’ll let him know myself I’m close to his office.” 

“Thank you, that’d be great!” 

Part of Valerie wanted to deny the woman entry, but who was she to do that? Besides, this was a chance to see Marcus’s reaction. In the past, he’d drop whatever he was doing to greet Olsen with a huge smile. They’d leave together, and he wouldn’t come back to the office that day. 

Back then, Valerie hadn’t cared who Marcus was dating. But now, things were different. Deep down, she hoped he’d ask her to turn Olsen away. As she walked toward Marcus’s office, countless thoughts swirled in her mind.

“Marcus… Miss Olsen is at reception. She’s asked to see you” Valerie said nervously. 

Marcus looked up from his papers and gave a faint smile. That sinile annoyed Valerie–this wasn’t the reaction. she wanted to see. 

“Should I let her in?” she asked, trying to sound serious. 

“Oh! I’ll go down to meet her. Please let the receptionist know that Dr. Olsen can wait for me there,” Marcus. replied, standing and adjusting his jacket.
