Chapter 0216
“Valerie, you’re such an idiot!” she scolded herself. “You’re letting him fool you again! No, no, no—I won’t p through this again, not like with Maximus!”
It felt absurd. A few years ago, she’d been the wife, and it was the assistant having an affair with her husband. Now she was the assistant, and the man she was dating had just rushed to meet an ex. It was clear: she was just a placeholder until Olsen returned.
Her insecurities and fears came flooding back, dragging along painful memories she thought she’d buried. She struggled to catch her breath, feeling utterly defeated. Determined to compose herself, she went to Frederick, handed him the information he’d asked for, and requested to leave early.
Back in Marcus’s office, she grabbed her bag without caring whether he was back or not. Then, without looking back, she left.
On the other hand, when Marcus heard that Olsen had announced herself at reception, he immediately noticed Valerie’s expression. It was clear she knew about the relationship he’d once had with Olsen. But that had been a long time ago, and before any misunderstandings could arise, he decided to go down and meet her. The last time he’d seen Olsen, everything had been resolved. He couldn’t follow her to London, nor would he hold her back from her professional growth. All that had been left was their final farewell. So why was she showing up now? He was mulling it over as he walked past Valerie without looking at her.
“Marcus! How have you been, darling?”
“Hey, Olsen! I’ve been good, and you?”
“Good, very good. I was visiting Hesperia and thought I’d stop by to see you. Do you have time for a coffee?”
Marcus felt conflicted. He needed to talk to Olsen to understand the reason for her visit, but he didn’t want Valerie facing his past. Thinking it would be simpler, he agreed to the coffee, not realizing that as he left with Olsen, Valerie would see them just as she was leaving the office.
After a tense, silent 10–minute drive, they arrived at a cafe they used to frequent. Both ordered Americanos, and while waiting for their drinks, Marcus broke the silence.
“Olsen, I don’t want you to misunderstand my actions, but I need to know–why did you come to see me? 1 thought we ended things over six months ago. So what brings you here now?”
“Marcus, I just wanted to see you. I know we’re over, but I thought we could still meet as friends. I wanted to ask -how’s your leg? How are you feeling?”
“Olsen, you could have asked me that in an email or a call. There was no need to come all the way here. Honestly, I don’t want your visit to be misinterpreted”
“Marcus, who could possibly misinterpret this? Unless… you’re seeing someone? Did you really move on from me so quickly?”
“Olsen… Let me make something clear. I don’t owe you any explanations. We ended on good terms last time, and I’d rather not ruin that by you doing something reckless.”
“Marcus… There’s no need to talk to me like that. If you didn’t want to meet, you could’ve just said no,” Olsen replied, visibly upset.
“Olsen, let me explain something I should have said from the start. I’m grateful for all the time and effort you put into my recovery. But gratitude doesn’t mean I’ll always be there for you. We’re adults. Yes, we had something, but it didn’t work out. We went our separate ways. Whether it was good or bad, it’s over. When someone ends a relationship, they don’t go seeking out the person they left behind.”
