Sunday arrived quickly, and Valerie and Serenity were at the airport, saying goodbye to Marcus. Serenity’s eyes widened when she saw her father boarding a massive airplane. Tears began to well up, and she didn’t fully grasp that he was leaving but would be back. Inevitably, she burst into tears and threw a tantrum, struggling in Valerie’s anns as she tried to break free and run after her father. 

Marcus’s heart ached at the sight. This little girl, undeniably his daughter in every way that mattered, had changed him. What had once been easy to do–leaving for a business trip–now felt nearly impossible. Stopping in his tracks, he turned back to see her. Valerie, seeing no other choice, set Serenity down, and the little girl ran toward him. 

My little Serenity,” Marcus said, crouching down and scooping her into his arms. “I have to go on a trip, but I’ll be back soon, my love. Just a few days, and I’ll be home.” 

Serenity’s face was streaked with tears and, to Marcus’s amusement, a little bit of snot. He didn’t care–he hugged her tightly. Then, noticing the Rolex he never took off, he slipped it off his wrist and handed it to her. 

“This is my watch. My father gave it to me, and it’s always with me. Now I’m giving it to you. When I come back, you can give it back to me, okay? But you have to take really good care of it! And when I return, if you want, we’ll get on one of these planes together and go to the beach. What do you think? The kind of beach you see on your favorite TV show, huh?” 

Serenity clutched the watch in her small hands, holding it tightly. She tried her best to understand what her father was saying and eventually nodded, her curiosity piqued at the mention of the sea. She’d never been to the beach, but it looked so beautiful on TV. 

“Alright, my little one. Wipe those tears and come walk with me to the stairs. I need to fly so he can come back quickly, okay?” 

Valerie stood nearby, watching the scene unfold. Seeing how Marcus said goodbye to Serenity, she felt more certain than ever that if they ever took the next step in their relationship, Marcus was the only one worthy of being her daughter’s father. 

“Now go with Mom, and no more tantrums, alright?” Marcas said as he handed Serenity’s little hand back to Valerie. 

He kissed Serenity’s pale cheeks one last time before turning to Valerie and doing the same. 

“My love, take good care of her. She says she’ll behave and take care of my watch. When I get back, she’ll be the first to give it back to me.” 

Frederick drove Valerie and Serenity home. Observing the little girl, he couldn’t help but think that if Marcus had been given the chance to be a father, he would have done an excellent job. Even now, with Serenity being his friend’s daughter, Marcus acted as if she were his own. Frederick was especially surprised that Marcus had given her his watch–a gift from his father that he had never parted with in all the time they’d known each other. 

After an eight–hour flight, Marcus finally arrived in Valentia. It was late–10:00 p.m. on Sunday night–but in Valentia, it was 8:00 am. Monday morning. Marcus had slept during the flight, knowing he couldn’t afford to waste time once he arrived. He had pressing matters to handle, and his priority was to return to Hesperia and his ” girls” as quickly as possible. 

At the airport, he was greeted by a man known as Mr. Valeria. He went by this name to avoid complications, though it wasn’t his real one. Over time, everyone had simply adopted it.
