Chapter 0240
“Come in!” said Maximus when he heard his eldest son’s voice.
“Father… how have you been?” Lucius asked as he entered the study.
There was no doubt about it–Lucius was his spitting image. He always carried himself with pride, walking upright and paying meticulous attention to his appearance. Maximus looked at him and couldn’t help but sigh. He wanted a better fate for his son than his own, but when he thought about how influenced Lucius was by the Levett family, he set those thoughts aside. Deep down, he knew his son wasn’t a good person, and he blamed himself for that.
“Take a seat,” Maximus said, gesturing to the chair in front of his desk.
“Father… what’s going on with the company? Mother called me in a panic. She said Bartz is back and wants to take over the company. Is that true?”
“Son, did you fly all the way from London just because your mother told you that?” Maximus asked, irritation evident in his tone.
“Of course! Lately, you’ve been making poor decisions, and someone has to bring order to this family,” Lucius replied, his tone arrogant.

Maximus took a deep breath and sighed. He knew full well that his son had no respect for him. But what he still didn’t know was how far Lucius would go if given full control. Between leaving the company in Lucius’s hands or Bartz’s, Maximus would choose the latter a thousand times over. After all, the company was his.
“Son, do I need to remind you who your father is? Who owns all of this? You have–or will have–a stake in the company, but only when I decide to pass it on to you, and that won’t be for a long time. As I’ve told your mother before, I’m telling you now–this company isn’t 100% ours. Three families are involved. And now, your cousin has surfaced.”
“What? What the hell are you talking about?” Lucius asked, shocked.
“Just what you heard. Your cousin–your Uncle Peter’s daughter–has returned. She’s somewhere in Valentia now. I’ve already met her. She’s the spitting image of your uncle and bears a striking resemblance to her mother too.”
“But how can you be sure she’s his daughter? What if she was just given the surname?” Lucius said, trying to stir conflict about his cousin.
“Lucius… do you take me for a fool? I know that to give her what’s rightfully hers, a paternity test would need to be done. But I can assure you, she’s Peter’s daughter. I have no doubt. She even has features similar to yours.”
Lucius was undeniably handsome–a mirror image of his father, only with a much fairer complexion. For years, Maximus had looked at Lucius as a child and imagined he was a son he could have had with Mary. He had often wondered what it would have been like to have a child with her and which traits would have prevailed. He had always hoped they’d be hers–his ex–wife had been stunningly beautiful.
“Fine, when that happens, I want to be present,” Lucius demanded challengingly.
