Chapter 0245
1The past]
The next morning, Marcus set off toward Florentia, with a specific destination in Lunavalle in mind. It had been years since his last visit, but today he felt the urge to stop by the Bartz family mausoleum. The last time he’d been there, Peter had accompanied him.
Marcus had several bouquets of white flowers in the car. I first stop was to visit the graves of his parents and brother. He placed the flowers carefully and ran his hand over each headstone, as if he were touching a living person. After spending some time there, he moved on to vist his grandfather’s grave.
He spoke softly, expressing gratitude for everything his grandfather had done for the family. Marcus thanked him for bringing Catherine into his life–the woman who, for a time, had acted as his grandmother. But since Peter’s death, their relationship had become strained, at least from Marcus’s perspective.
After a few moments of reflection, Marcus made his way to the resting place of his beloved Valentina and their child.
“My dearest Valentina, forgive me for not coming to see you last year. I wasn’t in the right state of mind. You know… I’ve met someone. I know I shouldn’t be telling you this, but who else can I talk to, if not you?”
Marcus knelt beside her grave, arranging the bouquet of white flowers with care.
“I know you can see her from where you are. She’s beautiful, inside and out. Her name is Valerie, and she has a little girl named Serenity. She’s just a baby. Both of them have hearts of gold. Valerie also lost the love of her life, just like I lost you and our son.”
He paused, his voice trembling slightly.
“I won’t lie–I feel guilty. The man she loved with all her heart was my friend. I swear I never intended to fall for her. At first, I only saw her as the mother of my friend’s child. I helped her with expenses for the baby because I felt it was my responsibility. But over time…” Marcus adjusted the flowers again, his hands moving restlessly.
“Valentina, I know you understand. I don’t want to be along anymore. I know I’ve done things I’m not proud of. I’ve been with so many women, and yet my heart always felt empty. But now, I want to change. I want to settle down. I want to know what it’s like to have a family again. I want to be a father, a husband, a lover. I want to come home to someone waiting for me, just like it was with you.
His voice softened, almost breaking.
“I’m sure Valerie is the right person. We’ve both been through so much, and maybe, if she gives me a chance, can make her happy. She doesn’t realize it, but she already makes me happy. I don’t have much to offer–my heart is patched together with memories–but when I’m with her, her presence soothes me. I feel at peace, and I feel alive.”
He closed his eyes, tears welling up as he spoke.
“This is a feeling I only ever had with you, my love. But you’re not here anymore, and this damn life won’t let me go. Please, let me love again. Let me stop feeling so alone. You and our baby will always be in my heart. I will never forget you. But help me, Valentina. Help this woman let me into her life and into her daughter’s life.”
Marcus leaned forward, his voice barely above a whisper.
“I love you, Valentina. I love our son. I love every memory we made together. I love everything we were. But you know I can’t keep going like this. I can’t keep crying over what I’ve lost. I need to believe that you’ll always be with me, somehow.”

After what felt like an eternity of talking–pleading, really Marcus finally stood. He adjusted the flowers one last time, whispered a soft goodbye, and walked back to his car.
Once inside, he started the engine and queued up Nocturne Op. 9, No. 2. The familiar melody filled the car, soothing his frayed emotions. It was a song his mother had played for him as a child to help him sleep. Over the years, it had become a reminder of a simpler, happler time
As he drove away, the weight on his chest lifted just slightly, though the lingering ache remained. For now, he carried the faint hope of building something new amidst the pain of his past.
