There was nothing left of the naive 16–year–old girl she had once been. Life had given her loving parents, but her lack of judgment and inexperience had led her down paths she never should have taken. Now, at 53 years old, she found herself trapped in a loveless marriage, held together only by sex and their children.
If that charming young Maximus had only asked her to be his girlfriend a little sooner, she would never have let Gabriel into her life. She and Maximus could have been a happy couple, their children older, their marriage stable. They wouldn’t be embroiled in endless arguments. Back then, she had genuinely liked Maximus, but Gabriel’s allure and the excitement of forbidden experiences had clouded her judgment.
“Listen to me, Alexia Levett,” she said firmly to her reflection. “You’ve sacrificed too much to lose it all now. Bartz and his damn wife won’t take your money. Do what you have to do, but don’t let them win.”
In two days, Alexia was set to hand over one of her positions. Her team of subordinates was working overtime to prepare everything for the transition. Among them, the one she trusted most had been given a special task: to erase all records that could expose her siphoning of funds.
At home, she hoped her son could reason with Maximus. Over the years, her husband had become increasingly distant, slipping further and further out of her grasp. He was no longer the indulgent, patient man he had been when they were young.
The once chivalrous Maximus, who had allowed her to have her way in almost everything, had grown more critical of her decisions. Not everything she proposed went into effect anymore. Alexia remembered how, in the early years of their marriage, she had felt like his only confidante at work. She had wielded significant power, but after the disaster caused by her grandfather, Maximus had become far more cautious. Most of her ideas were now dismissed, and the trust they once shared had clearly eroded
