Valerie’s eyes followed his movements, and she felt a wave of warmth spread through her body. Her cheeks flushed as she realized what was happening. Marcus stood up from his chair and got down on one knee. 

“Valerie Mary Hunter, I love you. I don’t have words to fully express what I feel. I love you. You’ve made me the happiest man alive. Will you marry me?” Marcus said, opening the small black box to reveal the elegant engagement ring he had carefully chosen for her. 

When Marcus had called the restaurant to make the reservation, they’d told him about the retractable roof. As it began to close and the ornamental lights brightened, it gave the space an extra romantic touch. Marcus had even requested a specific song to play as background music. And as everything came together, the soft melody began to play: 

“But I can’t help, falling in love with you…” 

That song held a special meaning for Marcus. He had heard it on the radio one night when he was driving Valerie and Serenity home after a Sunday outing: Back then, Valerie hadn’t started working directly with him yet; she was still the receptionist. He didn’t know why, but as soon as he heard the song, he’d thought of her the woman who was sitting in his car, cradling Serenity in the back seat, fast asleep.
