Chapter 0269
Maximus.
I understand your guilt now. But do you think ring the way you are now changes anything? You’re just sinking further into the same mess you created. Wake up! You’re not doing anything extraordinary, you’re running on autopilot. I truly regret what you did to that woman. She didn’t deserve any of it. Your grandmother, your wife, and especially you caused so much pain to a young girl whose only mistake was trusting you. But now, crying–what good does it do?” Diana’s voice trembled with fury.
She was disappointed in the man she thought she knew. But no matter how let down she felt, she couldn’t judge him solely based on his past. The Maximus she knew was so different from the man he described. Still, she couldn’t save him, even if she wanted to. He wasn’t Indifferent to her, but she couldn’t watch him drown in his self–pity.
After that night, their strange relationship–whatever it had been–broke. Over the next two weeks, their contact was minimal. Finally, Diana took the initiative.
“Maximus, I’m leaving tomorrow. Today’s my last day here. Here’s my resignation letter. Matthew asked me to hand it to you,” Diana said, handing him a folder.
Maximus stared at her. He knew she wouldn’t forgive his past. He couldn’t ask anything of her. His life, for better or worse, had been this way for 15 years. She wasn’t going to change that. Taking the folder, he signed the letter. Diana had hoped for a different response, but his silence made it clear he had made his choice. She sat down and said:
Maximus Palmer, when I came for the interview, all I wanted was a place to gain experience. My stay here was hanging by a thread. Now I’m leaving with more than I ever imagined. I’m leaving with a piece of you. I really liked you, Maximus. But you’re not free, and I don’t want that for myself. Only you can decide whether to stay where you are or move forward. Maybe one day, if we meet again, I’ll see that you’ve made progress. If not, I’ll hold onto the good things about you and leave it at that. My opinion of you isn’t shaped by your past. I know who you are, and I know who I am. Maybe life brought us together to heal, or maybe to deepen the wounds. But for me, you helped me heal. I hope you do something with this experience too.”
She stood and walked to the door. Maximus quickly stopped her and pulled her into an embrace.
“Thank you, Diana. Stay. Stay with me,” he said, holding her tightly and memorizing the scent of her rose perfume. “You’ll have a lifetime job here. I’ll buy you a house. You’ll have a pension to support your family from
here.”
“Maximus, what you’re proposing is for me to become your mistress. If I stayed, that’s what I’d be. And no, I don’t want that. I’d love to stay, but the title you’re offering doesn’t sound appealing. I need to finish my degree, go home, live the life I’ve planned, and see the world. If I stay, you’d just be buying me “Diana’s voice was calm, her gaze steady.
Maximus understood. She was right. If she stayed, she’d become his mistress, and one day he’d grow tired of her and move on. That wasn’t the life Diana deserved. Reluctantly, he let her go.
As she left, Diana said something he would never forget:
