Meanwhile, Maximus was spending the day with his two young ladies. As they walked ahead of him, he observed them closely. Serenity and Laura couldn’t have been more different. Serenity was extroverted, always on the move, always looking for something to do. From the photos he’d seen, she clearly had a talent for photography. Her carefree style of dressing–jeans, T–shirts, and denim jackets–showed she wasn’t interested in fitting into high society. Laura, on the other hand, was sweetness personified. She was introverted and loved dressing like a little princess; her wardrobe was full of pastel colors. She looked like a delicate porcelain doll. 

The day passed uneventfully. They went to the cinema and watched a romantic movie. Maximus wasn’t used to this kind of film, and to be honest, he regretted agreeing to po. But it was two against one that day, so the majority ruled. Surprisingly, he ended up enjoying the movie. It told the story of a woman unappreciated by her partner, who watched her die–only to wake up the next day with a second chance to make things right. 

At the theater, both girls noticed Maximus was unusually quiet. To cheer him up, they decided he should sit in the middle. He carried the popcom while their drinks were placed on his seat. They spent the day indulging in junk food, something Maximus never thought he’d eat so much of. But it was a day with young women–gourmet meals weren’t on the menu. 

After an enchanting afternoon, Maximus and Laura dropped Serenity off at her university parking lot. The day had come to an end, and it was time to say goodbye. 

“Serenity… Serenity, could you give me your number?” Laura asked shyly, her head lowered. 

“Of course, Laura! Do you have something to write it down with?” Serenity replied with a warm smile. 

Serenity couldn’t help but notice how, despite being nearly 18, Laura still had a childlike demeanor. It was endearing. At that moment, Serenity decided she wanted to spend more time with her cousin. Laura gave her a strange sense of familiarity. 

Laura handed over her phone, and Serenity quickly saved her number. 

“Alright, I’ve added myself to your contacts. You can call me anytime you need something, and I’ll do my best to help. Also, you can find me on social media–I’ll send you an invite, and you just need to accept,” Serenity said, handing the phone back. 

“Alright, ladies. The sun’s setting, and you’d better get going. I don’t want you driving in the dark,” Maximus said, sounding like a protective father. 

Serenity was genuinely surprised. The Maximus she was seeing now seemed completely different from the one she’d met in Madrid. He was attentive and affectionate with Laura. She couldn’t help but wonder what it would have been like if Peter were still alive or if Maximus had been her father. Not that Marcus didn’t show his love, but as she grew older, her curiosity about Peter intensified. She longed to know the father life had denied her. 

After a round of hugs and goodbyes between Laura and Serenity, everyone went their separate ways. When Maximus and Laura arrived home, the house was silent. The staff had retired to their quarters, and there was no sign of Laura’s mother. As they chatted on their way in, both froze when they spotted a dark silhouette emerging from the living room. It was none other than Luclus 

“Laura, where have you been? I’ve been calling you, and you didn’t answer. I was worried sick, Lucius said, his tone a mix of coldness and overprotectiveness, “Good evening, Father.” 

“Lucius, we weren’t expecting you. Laura and I went out a bit,” Maximus replied calmly. 

“Well, well! Looks like loneliness has finally gotten to your Now you have time for Laura?” Luctus sant with biting
