The weekend passed quickly, and Marcus didn’t bring up Maximus again in front of Serenity. He regretted losing his temper and realized that Maximus’s actions were deliberate provocations. He resolved not to let his frustration spill over onto his beloved daughter again–it was something he wouldn’t allow to happen in the future. 

When Marcus arrived at Palmer Group on Monday, he didn‘ head straight to his own office. Instead, he marched directly into the CEO’s office without announcing himself. Maximus was already there. Seeing Marcus barge in, immediately knew the visit was about Saturday’s outing with Serenity. 

“Marcus, I’m busy right now. But tell me what do you need?” Maximus said calmly, not looking up from the document he was reviewing. 

“Maximus, didn’t I make myself perfectly clear last time? I don’t want you near my daughter!” Marcus said, his tone sharp with anger. 

“Let me make something clear to you,” Maximus replied, still focused on the papers before him. “Whether you like it or not, she’s a Palmer. She’s your daughter now, but she’s also my niece, and her blood is Palmer blood ” 

“Maximus, don’t exploit that connection. I know she’s your niece, and even though I wish she weren’t, I can’t deny the bond between you. But her being close to you disgusts me, and it worries me. Especially because of your wife. She’s already tried to harm her once. I hope you’re aware of that. As long as you let Alexis manipulate you, my daughter isn’t safe,” Marcus said, slamming the office door behind him as he left. 

Maximus stared at the closed door, irritation flashing across his face. Marcus’s presence, and even the lingering scent of his cologne–a fragrance that drove Valerie wild–unsettled Maximus. But he had to admit Marcus was right. As long as Alexis retained her influence, she’d continue hurting anyone who got in her way. That wouldn’t last much longer, though; once the divorce was finalized, Alexis would lose all the power the Palmer name granted her. 

For a few minutes, Maximus sat silently, absentmindedly spinning the pen he used to sign documents. ‘Father, I still don’t understand why you included those damned clauses in the Palmer Group’s property agreements. It’s causing me so many problems,” he thought 

but After reflecting for a while, Maximus realized something. Alexis currently thrived under the Palmer name, once they were divorced, she’d be left with only her alimony. While it was a substantial sum, Maximus knew her ambition would make her see it as mere scraps. He had always reminded her that he didn’t own the majority of their wealth–he only held a 16.5% share, inherited from his father. Why his father had bequeathed him that specific share, he didn’t know. 

Maximus recalled the night his father had called him to the company headquarters. He had given Maximus documents to sign, which a notary then stamped. One document bore Maximus’s name, but the second was blank. In fine print, the name Peter Palmer was listed as the intended holder, though the current owner was yet to be filled in. That share was meant for a future grandchild. Maximus now realized that the name on that document should be Serenity Bartz Hunter. 

Contemplating the storm brewing with his divorce, Maximus picked up his phone and sent a message: 

[Serenity, I need to talk to you.] 

The message was sent, and two checkmarks confirmed it had been delivered and read. Fifteen minutes passed without a reply. Maximus guessed Marcus had gotten wind of it and forbade her from responding. On the other hand, Serenity had seen the message but was in class and didn’t want to get distracted. Once the lecture ended, she replied: 

[What do you need to talk about? How’s Laura?]

Maximus exhaled in relief when he saw the reply. 

[Can I see you today?] 

Serenity felt uneasy, remembering the way her father had looked at her the last time this happened. 

[Maximus, I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’m sorry.] 

Maximus wasn’t one to give up easily. He responded: 

[This is very important. We need to discuss it.]
