Maximus took a deep breath, exhaling slowly as he tried to gather his thoughts. He didn’t know where to start, but he needed to persuade Serenity to agree to the DNA test as soon as possible. 

“Serenity, you told me you had questions about your father and that I was the one who could give you answers. I might not have all of them, but I can tell you who he was.” 

“Then tell me. What was he like? What did he do? Go on.” Serenity said impatiently, her arms crossed. 

“My brother was only two years younger than me. When we were kids, we were inseparable. Our mother was a wonderful woman–not from a wealthy family, but an incredible assistant to my father. He fell in love with her and married her. My grandmother supported their marriage because my mother was brilliant in business. She was always busy but found ways to make time for us. At least, that was true until I turned 15, and Peter turned 13 Then, she fell ill with a strange disease that no amount of money could cure. A year later, she passed away, leaving us motherless.” 

Maximus paused, his gaze distant. 

“After that, Peter and I started drifting apart. We each dealt with the loss differently, I met Alexis, my now–wife, when I was 16. We began a sweet relationship that helped me cope. Peter, on the other hand, grew rebellious. Slowly, we became strangers to one another. My father was demanding, and by the time I was 18, he had already involved me in the company’s business matters.” 

He let out a heavy sigh before continuing. 

“When I finally looked up, years had passed. My little brother wasn’t a mischievous kid anymore. One day, for reasons I never fully understood, he pushed Alexis down the stairs. It was chaos. We fought, he was expelled from school, and my father sent him away from Valeria to Galea. There, he was enrolled in a school for troubled teens. After that, our relationship never recovered.” 

Serenity remained silent, her eyes fixed on him as he spoke 

“I’m not telling you this to justify myself. Back then, I clung to Alexis to get through the pain of losing my mother. Meanwhile, your father he built himself up from nothing, becoming one of Valentia’s best brokers. He was a solitary man, but the few friends he had were true friends. 

“Peter never knew this, but I was always proud of what he accomplished. It wasn’t until years after his death that I discovered he worked with Marcus, your father. He had a beautiful house in Galea, near a cliff. If you ever want to visit it, I can give you the address. Marcus still pays to keep it exactly as it was the last time your father was there.” 

“Yes, I want to see it. I want to visit that place…” Serenity said, her eyes brimming with tears. 

“Don’t cry, my dear. He wouldn’t want you to cry for him Wipe those tears away and remember that he made your mother very happy. I was a beast to her, I won’t deny it. Seeing her again brought back a flood of emotions. I’ve even considered trying to reach out to her. But the more I think about it, the more I realize you’re a family. I have no place in that.” 

Maximus hesitated, then continued with a heavier tone. 

“Serenity, I’m tired of carrying this burden. I want to pass on what isn’t mine–including you. Your father left you 11% of the company, and your grandfather added another 5.5%. It’s a significant inheritance, whether you see it as money or shares.” 

“What are you trying to say?” Serenity asked, her brow furrowed with intrigue. 

“You own just as much of the company as Marcus does. Your mother holds 33%, which I intend to return to her.
