Valerie stood for a long time in front of Peter’s grave. She held the bouquet of peonies, unable to place them because someone had already left fresh flowers. She knew who it had been. She still couldn’t fully grasp what was happening. Ever since Serenity was born, she had feared this day, and now that Maximus knew the truth, she felt at slight weight lift from her shoulders. But the heavier burden was her uncertainty about how much longer she could keep this painful truth from Marcus. 

“What should I do, Peter? I don’t know how to tell Marcus the truth.” Valerie whispered, her hand resting on the cold plaque. 

Her mind was in turmoil, emotions swirling uncontrollably She had always imagined Maximus reacting with anger–shouting, threatening her, or storming off. She had prepared herself for those reactions, but not for what had actually happened. His calm request to be close to their daughter hurt her more than anything. Somewhere deep inside, in a corner of her heart, she had once felt something for him. Seeing him so vulnerable now disturbed her more than she could process. 

After standing there for several minutes, she left the cemetery. Her home was only a 20–minute drive away, but she wasn’t ready to face it–not in her current state. She asked the driver to stop at a park she had spotted on the way. For a moment, she felt like the 23–year–old girl she had once been, pregnant and terrified of her uncertain future. 

She sat on a bench, closed her eyes, and let the tears fall. Suddenly, she felt a warm embrace envelop her, easing the chill. A familiar, comforting scent surrounded her, and when she opened her eyes, she saw him. 

“My love! What are you doing here?” came the deep, soothing voice. 

“Marcus… L…” Valerie stammered, unable to finish. 

“I know how hard it is for you to visit Peter. Why did you go alone?” Marcus asked, his tone gentle. 

“I just… felt the need to see him today,” Valerie replied, gazing up at her devoted husband. 

“Well, let’s go home. It’s getting cold,” Marcus said, slipping off his blazer and draping it over her shoulders. 

Valerie took his hand, and they began walking toward his car. She tried to steady herself, not wanting to worry him. If he sensed something was wrong, she wouldn’t know where to start explaining. 

“How was your day at the advertising agency?” Marcus asked casually as they walked. 

“I had to leave. I waited for quite a while, but the marketing director had an unexpected issue and couldn’t meet with me,” she answered, feigning indifference. 

Marcus was a master at reading people, and his wife was no exception. He already knew she had run into Maximus at the cemetery–her bodyguards had informed him. What he wanted to unicover now was what they had talked about. Though coincidences happen, their interaction hadn’t been brief. 

“Weren’t you supposed to be in an important meeting?” Valerie asked, turning to him with a hint of suspicion. 

“I was, but you’re the most important thing to me. One of your bodyguards told me you were at the cemetery, and I know visiting Peter isn’t easy for you. So, I made my excuses and came to see you. Does that bother you?” 

“No, no! I’m just surprised to see you here,” Valerie replied, her doubt lingering. 

“You’re the most important thing to me. Never forget that you and our children are everything, and nothing- nothing will ever matter more than you.”

That heartfelt declaration didn’t comfort Valerie. Instead, made her feel like the worst wife in existence. Unable

Valerie couldn’t speak. Every question, every reassuring it was the weight of the lie she was keeping that crushed She wondered as he gathered her into his arms.
