“Does Alden know he has a sister or brother?” 

“He knows, and he wants to meet her! It’s a girl. She recently came from Hesperia to Valentia, and she’s stunning -only three years younger than Alden” 

“I still don’t get it. How did you and Peter even manage to conceive Alden?” 

“Well, in the traditional way…” 

“Katherine! That’s not what I meant. I mean, you barely saw Peter. It’s a huge coincidence that you got pregnant after just one night.” 

“I was disgusted with my marriage to you–know–who. If I were up to me, I would’ve run away with Peter. I know that if I had asked him, he wouldn’t have said no. But in the few messages we exchanged before seeing each other again, I noticed he wasn’t the same. He kept talking about this Mary woman. He didn’t say her name, but I knew it was always about her. I decided I didn’t want to keep going like that. It’s true that, at first, getting pregnant was a plan to keep Peter, but then I changed my mind.” 

“So, you planned to get pregnant by him?” 

“Of course! I wanted to keep him; that way, he wouldn’t have an excuse to say no to me. But that night we were together, when he made love to me like never before, I’ll never forget it. That night, he confessed he was thinking about making things official with that woman. His confession hurt me, even though I pretended it didn’t. That day, I returned to Russia and decided to forget about him. 1ook the morning–after pill and thought nothing would happen. But look–there’s Alden.”

“Do you know what my ex–husband would have done to me if he found out the child wasn’t his?”

“Well, when I realized the pill didn’t work, I was already three months along, I had to take drastic measures. 1 caused a huge scene with my husband, accusing him of all his infidelities. It wasn’t easy–I was scared–but I ended up divorcing him. Deep down, I know my ex–husband did love me, but not in the way I needed. So, after the divorce, I moved to Argentina. That’s where I decided to have Alden, far from my homeland. Later, I tried to reach out to Peter. I found out he hadn’t married that, mysterious woman, but by the time I did, she was already pregnant with his child. Obviously, he wasn’t going to leave her, so I had no choice but to say goodbye to my one true love.” 

“Oh, Katherine. If you were already in Argentina, why did you come back?” 

“Revenge! Peter taught me so much. His love for me, before that other woman, was immeasurable. There was passion, desire, lust–but there was also love. In his own way, but it was love. His death came to light when his brother, Maximus Palmer, started investigating Alexia Levert. We found out indirectly. The investigator is an acquaintance of mine, and when Maximus contacted him, he gave me a heads–up. We struck a deal–he’d give me a copy of the investigation before handing it to Maximus. That’s where I found the whole truth.” 

“It wasn’t easy, was it?” 

“Not for me, not for Alden. The investigation included photos of what was left of Peter. A man named Bartz had denied there was anything visible left, but these photos were taken before he made that statement.”
