She got dressed and sat at the vanity. Though it was clean, I still held toiletries for both her and Peter. Her heart clenched as she remembered their small arguments about using the mirror–she always hard to wait for Peter, who spent half an hour styling his wavy hair only to mess up and let it fall as it pleased 

On the vanity table, she noticed a small jewelry box. Valerie had never been fond of wearing jewelry, but Peter had given her beautiful pieces she couldn’t refuse. He loved using exotic stones. She suspected they came from Marcus, who dealt in precious minerals. Peter would find something he liked during his travels and have it turned into jewelry. 

Opening the box, she found the ring Peter had given her. In symbolized his promise to love, protect, and care for her until the end of their days, though neither had known how short those days would be. She tried to slip it on but remembered why she had stopped wearing it. During her pregnancy, her fingers had swollen, making it uncomfortable to wear, so she had put it away, intending to resize it later. 

Now, she took the box and placed it in her bag. She wore fine jewelry these days, but none compared to that small treasure from her youthful love. 

After one last glance around the room, she approached the door. Standing there, she looked back at the room and thought 

“Oh, Peter, we were happy, and that happiness was stolen from us. How much we had…” 

Afterward, Valerie stepped into the front garden. Memories of that dreadful night flooded her mind, but she chose to suppress them. She cut a few flowers from the garden and walked to the plaque placed in Peter’s memory, where the remains of old Agnes also rested. Gently, she laid the flowers down, then sat and began speaking to them as if they were there. It was a long conversation, and with each passing moment, her heart grew lighter, shedding some of the heavy burden it had carried. 

“My beloved Peter, things didn’t go as smoothly with Serenity as we had planned. Now I’m afraid to go home and not find Marcus there. I know he may never forgive me. I know I was wrong, but you know how scared I’ve always been–so afraid that they would cone and take away the only good thing we dreamed of together. I know she wasn’t your daughter, but those four months you gave me were all that remained after you left. I truly wished she had been your child. It pains me to think that nothing of you remains in my life.” 

After talking at length, Valerie stood and decided to walk along the edge of the beach. She remembered the day she asked Peter to walk there with her after he returned from Lunavalle. She had been terrified of what she would do if he didn’t accept the baby. At that time, he was all she had left. Peter’s response filled her heart with joy, and from that moment, she lived the best days of her youth. 

Her life now was completely different. Marcus had been there for her when she needed him most. He had cared for her daughter as if she were his own, even though she had been distant and resistant to his support at first. He always found ways to help her, even offering her a job when she needed it most. 

As her husband, Marcus constantly encouraged her to be her best self. He made her feel loved, cherished, desired, and protected. She knew that what had happened was largely her fault for not being honest from the start. Still, that didn’t excuse her husband’s actions. Yet she tried to understand his perspective, imagining herself in his shoes. The mere thought of someone revealing an unknown child to her made her anxious. It wasn’t the same situation, but the idea of it unsettled her deeply. 

Reflecting on this, she pulled out her phone, turned it on, and called her husband. 

“Marcus…” 

“Valerie, my love! Are you okay?”
