After a dramatic scene, those entrusted with the task of talding care of the woman who had once been the wife of Catherine Palmer’s eldest grandson moved the patient to a more private room. It was all part of the plan to transfer her out of the hospital and off the radar of those closest to her. There was no time to notify her young children. Her husband had decided to create her body, and although he was absent, the fact that a Palmer had paid the hospital bills and cremation costs maile it clear who was behind the decision.
That night was long–not only for those diligently carrying out their assigned duties but also for Alexia’s parents and, most of all, for Maximus, Each le he read from the fes Alden had given him broke his heart further, filling him with rage, pain, and overwhelming self–reproach.
Every report in the files pointed indirectly to Alexia Levett as the orchestrator of his brother Peter’s death. Names leaped off the page–Frank Levett and Theodore Bennett. They were the executors. Recorded phone calls confirmed it all, including the moment they reported that the “job” was done.
“Alexia… I’ll kill you with my own hands!” Maximas shouted into the empty room.
His throat ached from crying. He couldn’t fathom how the woman he had lived with for 20 years, who had betrayed him with his own father, had also orchestrated his brother’s death. All for the cursed money and that damn company. He had been an utter fool, handing this woman his trust on a silver platter. Alexia had ruined his life, Mary’s life, and had ultimately decided to take his brother’s life without a second thought.
Overcome with rage, Maximus began destroying everything in his study. The commotion startled Laura awake. Alarmed by the shouting and crashing sounds, she bolted from her room and ran toward the study. She hesitated before opening the door but couldn’t stop herself when she heard her father’s anguished cries.
“Dad! Dad! Please, calm down!” Laura screamed as she burst into the room, only to find her father holding a gun to his temple.
Guilt and remorse had consumed Maximus. He couldn’t imagine facing those around him anymore. In his pursuit of giving Lucius a family like the one he had once shared with Peter and their parents, he had armed Alexia with the means to destroy everything. He now saw himself as the sole culprit behind Peter’s death. His blindness and stupidity had cost so many lives.
“Laura, leave! Please, leave! I don’t want you to see this. Go now!” Maximus shouted, his finger trembling on the trigger.
“Dad… You can’t leave me. Not now–not when you’ve just started to care about me. Please..Laura sobbed, tears streaming down her face.
“Laura… I killed him. I killed your uncle. If only I hadn’t been so blind–if only I’d seen things clearly. I don’t deserve to live. I’ve destroyed too many lives. The great Maximus Palmer, the arrogant and proud Palmer, let himself be deceived by your mother…” Maximus wept, his voice breaking
“Dad… please.. Don’t do this. You’re my father. Don’t leave me alone—I wouldn’t know what to do without you. Mom doesn’t love me. I don’t know what will become of Lucius now. My brothers and I need you. You can’t abandon us you don’t have the right to leave us alone! Not you!” Laura screamed with all her might…
In that moment, Maximus, consumed by his grief, looked into his daughter’s eyes. Her expression was a mix of fear and desperation. This was the daughter he had pushed into the shadows for years, now pleading with him not to leave her alone. Though she trembled with fear, she didnt flee. Instead, she reached out her slender hand to him. Her entire body shook, and her eyes, brimming with tears, reflected a pain that mirrored his own. She looked like a lost little girl
Maximus couldn’t continue. Slowly, he lowered the gan, engaged the safety, and took his daughter’s hand

“Dad, I don’t know what’s tormenting you so much. Just a little while ago, you were fine. Whatever it is, I’m here for you. But you can’t leave me. I couldn’t do this alone couldn’t take care of my brothers. You’d leave us adrift.
“Mom doesn’t care about us, but at least you do. You’re not bad father. Sometimes you’re just too busy for us, but you always make sure we have everything we need. Do you remember the flowers you send me every birthday? Even though I knew I wasn’t your favorite, those flowers meant the world to me. Matthew told me you picked them yourself. It was the most wonderful part of every year
“Don’t leave me, Dad. Please don’t,” Laura said, her trembling hands reaching for him, her tears flowing freely.
“I’m sorry, my daughter. I’m sorry I scared you like this. 1 just felt so lost for a moment… You’re right. I can’t afford to leave you alone. You and your brothers need me. Soon, I’ll bring them back home, and we’ll get a dog You’ll see we’ll become a complete family again,” Maximus said as he pulled Laura into a tight embrace. His mwn pain poured out, but the sight of his daughter’s suffering was far stronger than his own despair.
Laura’s eyes and nose were red, her expression filled with confusion. She didn’t understand what could have tormented her father so deeply when, just hours ago, he seemed fine.
“Dad, let’s go to bed. Come on, tonight I’ll take care of you. But give me that gun first,” Laura said, extending her hand toward him.
Maximus felt a deep wave of remorse as he looked at his daughter. ‘How could I have been so blind?” he thought. This girl was his daughter, and for years, the only good thing he had consistently given her were the flowers he painstakingly selected for her birthday–flowers she received on the same date as Mary’s birthday. The realization stung even more.
“No, sweetie. Let’s do something better,” Maximus said, his voice filled with guilt. “Put the gun in the safe and change the code. How about that?”
