“Maximus, wake up already! Don’t be lazy–that’s my job! You’re going to be late for work, and your father will lose his mind if you’re not ready for the meeting. Come on, ove, get up.” said a soft voice in Maximus’s ear.
Slowly, Maximus opened his eyes. Sunlight streamed through the curtains in the master bedroom, and he glanced around, disoriented. The voice continued.
“Maximus Palmer, get up! And don’t you dare blame me later if we’re late for work,” the voice said again, now with an energetic tone
Maximus rubbed his eyes, stunned. The woman speaking to him… Was it Mary?
“Mary?” he asked incredulously.
“Stop pretending you’re asleep, Maximus. Breakfast is ready. I made café de olla and French toast. Emma says we need to go grocery shopping later; there are a few things missing in the kitchen.”
Maximus stared at her, still in shock. It was Mary, her pregnant belly unmistakably visible. ‘She’s talking to me? What the hell is going on? His mind reeled. The last thing he remembered was his life in ruins his heart shattered after realizing that his wife, Alexia, had orchestrated the death of his brother Peter.
“Maximus, I’ve tried being nice. Come down when you’re ready. I’m heading to the kitchen because this little one is hungry, and so am I. Our stomachs are growling!” Mary said, placing her hand on her rounded belly with a reasing smile. “Oh, and don’t forget–we have the ultrasound appointment today!”
Maximus couldn’t make sense of what was happening, but whatever it was, he wasn’t about to waste the opportunity. As Mary slowly made her way to the bedroom door, he rushed forward and wrapped his strong arms around her from behind. Burying his nose in her hair, he inhaled her familiar, incomparable scent. Her petite frame, barely over 5’2“, combined with her pregnant belly, made her look more endearing than ever. Her furrowed brow of mild annoyance only added to her charm
“You know I love you, right?” Maximus asked, needing reassurance that this was real.
“I know. I love y you too, and so does our daughter,” Mary said, smiling warmly. “But don’t use that as an excuse to keep us waiting for breakfast. Go freshen up and get ready for work. I’ll be in the kitchen with Emma–1 think I’ll need to reheat the coffee.”
Turning to face him, she gave him a tender kiss. Maximus returned it, pouring all the emotions he had buried for 20 years into that single moment.
“Maximus, let me go. If you don’t, I won’t be able to stop myself. And don’t forget–you have a meeting with the shareholders today. Your father is coming back from Nepal Catherine told me Leopold is bringing him, along with my grandfather. Peter, as usual, made his excuses–he’s off in Bolivia visiting Tiwanaku.”
“How do you know all this?” Maximus asked, a note of doubt in his voice.
“Maximus, you’re full of jokes today. Now, hurry up, or we’ll be late!”
“We’ll be late?”
“Of course! Don’t try convincing me to stop working again ‘ve told you–I’m pregnant, not sick. I can still go to the office. Matthew needs my help, and you’re always sending him from one task to another. If I’m not there, who’ll manage your personal affairs?”
Maximus was speechless. He didn’t know if he was dreaming, but if he was, he never wanted to wake up.
“Oh, by the way, Chester dug holes in the garden again. That dog is going to drive me crazy. He’s been chasing

squirrels all day. Check on him later–Marie might have scratched him. He tried to steal her bed, and now she’s furious. I’ve caught him trying to eat my fish, too.”
“We have a dog?” Maximus asked curiously.
“Yes, we have a dog, a cat, and some fish. And you keep talking about getting another dog, but we can barely manage one. Two would be twice the trouble, and I don’t know where we’d find the time to care for them.”
“Okay… I’ll get ready and join you for breakfast. Then we’ll head to work together.”
Maximus stepped into the shower, his thoughts swirling. This has to be a dream,” he told himself. Everything seemed so different—the mansion had an unfamiliar tranquility. Mary looked so young, as did he. ‘What’s going
It was the life he should have had: living happily with Mary, sharing the joy of her first pregnancy. She looked radiant, her youthful energy amplified by the glow of motherhood.
When he came downstairs, the house was filled with the rich aroma of coffee. Mary sat at the table, eating with pusto. Her cheeks puffed out adorably with food, and she rubbed her belly with satisfaction.
He really
y needed this breakfast!” she said with a contented smile, her hand resting protectively on her stomach.
Maximus, still dazed from the dreamlike perfection of the day, had spent every moment savoring what felt like a miracle. But as the warm sun rose the next morning, reality greeted him harshly. The idyllic vision of his life with Mary dissolved. He woke up in his cold, empty reality–the same room, the same house, and no Mary lying beside him. Instead, it was Laura, his daughter, who clung to him her sleep
His knuckles ached, swollen and bruised from the rage–fueled destruction in the study the night before. His entire body was sore, but none of it compared to the ache in his heart.
Carefully, he shifted away from Laura without waking her. He pulled the blanket over her, making sure she was warm and comfortable, then quietly slipped out of the room.
Maximus wandered into the garden, the fresh morning air doing little to clear the heaviness clouding his mind. He reached into his pocket and retrieved the card Alden had given him. Without hesitation, he dialed the number.
“Alden,” he said, his voice hoarse,
