Marcus dropped Serenity off at home after a thorough check–up, but he still couldn’t get the young man he had just met out of his mind. He couldn’t deny that the boy was the spitting image of his friend, which left him with a bittersweet feeling. At first, it had pained Marcus to learn that Serenity wasn’t Peter’s daughter. It meant there was nothing left of his friend in this world. Now that the truth had come to light, he didn’t know whether to feel relieved or uneasy. He couldn’t guess the young man’s intentions. “Why did he show up out of nowhere? How could neither Peter nor I have known about his existence?‘ he thought, watching his daughter sleep.
This was something he couldn’t forgive Leonardo for. No matter how old the man was, what he had done was going to cost him dearly. Marcus’s family was his priority, and he wouldn’t tolerate such a grave insult. But for now, his anger had to wait. The most important thing was fixing things with his wife. He had thought about driving to Galea, but the delay at the doctor’s office while they checked on Serenity made him decide to take a flight instead, saving as much time as possible.
After a 45–minute trip, he arrived at the private airport in Galea and drove straight to Peter’s house. He hadn’t set foot there since that torturous night, just as he hadn’t seen Valerie. As he got closer, memories of his first marriage and his visits to Peter came flooding back, each one heavier than the last. A knot formed in his throat. On his way to the house, he stopped at a florist and bought a bouquet with some of Valerie’s favorite flowers. He couldn’t show up empty–handed. The sun was already setting, so he stepped on the gas, cutting the travel time in
half.
When he reached the gate, he searched for the keys and entered what had been his home for at least three years. Memories with his wife hit him like a wave. The palm tree they had planted together was still there, as were the other flowers that had once been tiny. Now they were sprawling vines, a vivid reminder of how much time had passed.
Valerie was waiting for him outside, sitting on the steps leading to the front door. It was clear she, too, was lost in memories of this place she had once called home.
“Valerie…
of flowers.
“Marcus said hesitantly, approaching her. He gave her a kiss on the cheek and handed her the bouquet
Valerie looked at them and took a sniff. Though she was angry, hurt, and scared about the conversation they were about to have, she smiled and said, “Thank you, they’re beautiful! Let’s take a walk. I like watching the sunset from the beach.”
She stood up and placed the bouquet on the bench near the entrance. Extending her hand to Marcus, she led him toward the path that went down to the shoreline. When they reached the sea, it was calm. The waves came and went gently. She took off her shoes and tucked them behind a rock. Marcus did the same, and the two of them walked hand in hand along the shore.
