“She didn’t hesitate when she ordered my father’s murder She didn’t think about leaving Mary and her daughter without a husband or father. So why are you thinking about her? Do you still love her?” Alden snapped, losing what little patience he had left.
“I don’t love that damn woman!” Maximus shouted, “But still can’t act against her directly. Tell me how you want to proceed, and I’ll help you.”
“I don’t need your help! I just need you to stay out of my way. Focus on the company, on my cousins. Build a relationship with Serenity,” Alden said, his tone commanding “Besides, in her current state, I doubt she can do much”
“What are you talking about? What state?” Maximus asked startled by Alden’s revelation.
“Don’t you know? I thought maybe you didn’t go because you were planning to divorce her, but are you telling me you didn’t know your wife had an accident yesterday? Alden asked, visibly surprised.
“What? No one told me anything!” Maximus shouted, his eres locked on Alden.
“I assumed you did. From what I hear, she wasn’t doing well, but don’t worry–I’m already taking care Alden replied, his tone devoid of remorse.
of it,”
Maximus felt a chill run down his spine. There was something unsettling about Alden’s piercing gaze. As much as Maximus had wanted to wring his wife’s neck the night before, venting all his anger and frustration over the chaos she had caused, hearing Alden talk about her so casually made him uneasy.
“Where is she? Tell me…” Maximus demanded, his voice tinged with desperation.
“She’s where she needs to be,” Alden replied calmly. “Yesterday, they called you to see her, and you didn’t lift a finger. Instead, you chose to find your daughter. How is that any different from what I’m doing now?”
“Where is she?” Maximus repeated, his tone rising, barely able to contain his anger.
“She was declared dead yesterday. I authorized her cremation. She had a car accident, probably fleeing from you after you dragged her to those warehouses and confronted her with the investigation. I suppose she didn’t suffer much. Given her condition, it was probably for the best.”
Maximus felt like he had been doused in ice water. With everything that had happened, he hadn’t taken the time to process what they had said about his wife being in the “hospital.” He had dismissed it as just another ploy to pressure him into doing her bidding.
“How do you know she’s dead?” Maximus asked, staring intently at the young man.
“I didn’t say she was dead–I said she was declared dead. In her current condition, death would be a mercy. But 1 won’t let that happen Uncle, I’m sharing this with you because I want you to understand what’s going to happen from now on and why I’ve stepped into your lives now,”
Alden’s voice turned calm, almost calculating. “I don’t need to work at Palmer Group, but I want to. My father never worked here, but he admired you. He always spoke about how you managed everything, how effortlessly you closed deals. According to my mother, he admired you more than you could ever imagine,” Alden said, his eyes shining with emotion
“What are you going to do with Alexia? Maximus asked hesitantly.
“I’m not going to let her die, simple as that. She’ll live for as long as she wants. But you know, she’s quadriplegic now. Do you think she’ll find much joy in that kind of life? Alden said coldly.
