Chapter 0378
At the house where Peter had left his son, Theodore was keeping an eye on the young couple. Though he had no children of his own, he understood the saying: blood calls to blood. The moment he saw the boy, he knew he was Peter’s son. That same boy, whom Peter had once only intended to observe from a distance, was now there, being helped by a man who had lost his memories but was showing genuine care for someone for the first time.
Theodore was deep in thought when the boy’s voice interrupted him.
“Theodore, can you tell me what happened to my father? He told me you’re the one who knows the most about it. Could you explain?” Alden asked, glancing at Grace, who was lying on the couch in the living room.
“Young man, why do you want to know about such things? Be satisfied with what your father has told you,‘ Theodore said, trying to dodge the question.
“No. My supposedly dead father has just shown up, and I want to know why he never came back, why he never looked for us. I know he’s trying to explain himself, but I can’t believe everything he says,” Alden replied.
“If you don’t believe your father, why would you believe me?” Theodore retorted, a bit irritated by the boy’s persistence.
“Try to understand–my father, who was supposed to be dead, isn’t. That doesn’t make sense,” Alden said, frustrated. “Don’t get me wrong; I’m grateful he’s here, but his sudden appearance leaves me with so many questions.”
“Your father survived by a miracle,” Theodore said, his tone softening.
“How?”
“This might sound ridiculous, but I was involved in his supposed death. The person who tampered with his car’s brakes was sitting right next to me. I watched as his car veered off the road and plunged into the ravine,” Theodore said, looking away.
Theodore, clearly annoyed by Alden’s persistence, took a deep breath to calm himself and walked toward the small study in the safehouse.
“You want to talk? Fine, let’s talk. But what I’m about to tell you could have serious consequences for you in the future. Are you ready to face them?”
“Yes! I want to know what happened to my father. If that means taking responsibility for it, will,” Alden said, not fully understanding what Theodore meant.
Theodore poured himself a bit of cognac, downed it in one gulp, and sat in the chair behind the desk
“Your father and I worked together when he was just a young man–25 years old, I think. Our job mostly involved preparing activity reports. I have to admit, your father was a good man. We quickly developed an odd partnership.
“Peter was young and careless about his security. He liked to keep a low profile, but that didn’t stop people from wanting to harm him–just like what happened. Frank Levett was one of the most powerful men in Valentia, and no one dared to cross him. His granddaughter was the apple of his eye. She was engaged to your uncle, Maximus Palmer.
“Your father knew some unsavory details about her, and since Maximus was about to marry her, it wasn’t convenient for Peter to stay alive. On top of that, Frank Levett found out who your father was working for, and that put a target on his back.
“From your face, I see you’re confused. At that time, I worked for Frank. He had assigned me to deal with the issue. I delayed it as much as I could, but after several reminders, Frank decided to have someone else take care of

“That’s how we got to the day your father supposedly died. learned about the plan just hours before the accident. I sent him a message, but I had his executioner with me the entire time. All I could manage was to send him two or three words of warning.
“Your father hated driving at night. His eyesight was fine, but driving after dark made him nervous–I don’t know why. He was driving fast, and we followed at a distance. I didn’t know exactly what they had planned for him, but in a moment, I saw his car go off the road and down the ravine. My companion handed me the phone, and I reported to Frank that the job was done.
“Like nothing had happened, we turned around and left the area. After shaking off my companion, I sent my trusted men to search for Peter. To my surprise, they found only one body in the passenger seat.
“That night, I learned that after receiving my message, Peter had requested an escort–someone I had assigned to him earlier. That man was in the car with him. My men searched the area around the ravine. It took them hours to find Peter. He had jumped from the car to save himself, but his body was broken–multiple fractures, and his skull had smashed against a rock. It was a miracle he survived.
