Serenity released her and nodded silently, her tearful eyes wide with anticipation. 

Valerie took a deep breath and began. “I told you I fell hopelessly in love with Maximus Palmer, but things didn’t work out. After my suicide attempt, I was discharged from the hospital and went to his grandmother’s house. Peter stayed with me for a few days, but unexpectedly, one day Maximus showed up–and he didn’t leave. He gave me a week by his side–a week that felt like a dream.” 

“That week was everything I had once hoped for. I thought could forgive him and start fresh, forget the pain, the humiliation. It crossed my mind. At first, I didn’t trust him, but by the end of the week, his presence was all I needed. It was exactly what I had dreamed of three years earlier.” 

“Finally, what happens with any couple in love happened. That’s when you were conceived. Yes, my love, you were conceived with so much love. At least that’s how I see it, and I’m certain your father feels the same.” 

“It wasn’t until recently that I learned why your father left and abandoned me. I suffered terribly. I had to be admitted to a psychiatric clinic for what they called ‘rehabilitation.‘ That’s where I discovered I was pregnant with you. The doctor in charge of my case didn’t put me on any medications and helped me close some chapters of my life.” 

“When I left the clinic, I knew Maximus was with Alexia Levett and that they were expecting a child. That broke me inside. But I wasn’t going to allow myself to suffer for him again. Now I had you on the way. At first, I wanted to take my savings and forget the Palmer family entirely. There wasn’t much tying me to them except your grandfather.” 

“But Peter returned as quickly as Maximus had left. He was always there, waiting and supporting me, standing by my side. He was the first person I told I was pregnant. His reaction was understandable–first surprise, then disappointment. But what shocked me most was how quickly his attitude changed. He began caring for me like no one else ever had, except for your great–grandfather Albert!“” 

“From one day to the next, he decided he wanted to be your father. That overwhelmed me. I had just divorced Maximus. How could I be with Peter? But, to be completely honest, when I lived with him as a very young woman, if my memory doesn’t fail me, there were several moments when we were on the verge of taking another step. But he always held back. Maybe he thought I was too young, or maybe he wanted my first time to be special.” 

“It didn’t take me long to decide. I said yes to him. He gave me an engagement ring. When I went to Galea recently, I found the jewelry box with the pieces he gave me during the four months we were together.” 

Valerie reached for a small, transparent crystal box and handed it to Serenity, who held it carefully in her hands. ” It’s beautiful!” Serenity exclaimed. 

“It was just a trinket we bought from a street vendor, but now I treasure it like it’s priceless,” Valerie said, her eyes filled with nostalgia. 

“What happened after you accepted Peter?” Serenity asked curiosity lighting her face. 

Valerie took a deep breath and let out a long sigh. She knew that the next part of her story would be bittersweet. It included some of the happiest moments of her life but also some of the saddest: the death of her beloved Peter and her cherished grandfather. 

“Peter was a true gentleman. He cared for the two of us as if we were his most precious treasures. At one point, we talked about you. He and I decided that we would always say he was your father. It all sounded so perfect coming from his lips. Everything seemed so easy. Life with him was easy. We were a happy couple. He was everything I had ever wanted Maximus to be.
