Peter took a shower and fell asleep like a rock, while Mary stepped out onto the balcony of her room, staring at the night sky. She wondered, “What could Maximus be doing now? I didn’t even get to say goodbye.” 

She sighed, recalling the conversation she overheard between Emma and Catherine. Maximus had someone else in his heart; she had only been a guest in his house, nothing more. ‘I shouldn’t have fallen for him, she thought. 

Shaking her head, she reminded herself, “Mary, don’t be foolish! This is your chance to discover new things. Peter says Grandpa is safe, and if he’s fine, you need to find your happiness too.” 

With that, she went to the kitchen to grab a glass of milk, took a bath, and put on the pajamas Grandma had bought for her before falling into a deep sleep. 

The next morning, sunlight poured through the sheer curtains, creating a dazzling display. She opened the sliding door and breathed in the scent of the sea. Deciding to take a walk, she ventured across the .meadow in front of her room. To her surprise, the house stood on a hill, with a path leading down to the 

beach. 

For a long time, she strolled along the shore, the sand golden and soft under her feet, the beach veiled in a light mist. It wasn’t cold; the warmth was pleasant, She collected a few seashells that caught her eye. Her nightgown, now damp with sea spray, clung to her body, accentuating her graceful curves. From a distance, Peter watched her, thinking, ‘How could Maximus be so blind? This girl is stunning, and yet he’s still obsessed with Alexia.” 

“Mary!” Peter’s voice called from afar. 

She turned and saw him motioning for her to come back. She reluctantly made her way up the makeshift steps. When she reached the top, Peter extended a hand to help her up, holding a cup of coffee in the other. He was dressed in gray silk pajama pants, and now that she saw him up close, she noticed how toned his body was. The night before, she hadn’t paid much attention, but he was far from thin, contrary to what Grandma had said. Blushing, she looked away. 

“Come on! Today I’m taking you into town to buy anything you need. We’ll get more clothes too. From what I saw yesterday, the clothes Grandma bought you won’t suit this warm weather.” 

“Oh, you don’t have to. I don’t want to trouble you if you’re busy.” 

“Woman! Did three months with Maximus kill your desire to go out? Let’s have breakfast, and then we’ll go shopping. I already asked Agnes to serve us in the garden. You haven’t seen it yet.” 

“Okay, let’s go.” 

The garden was beautifully arranged with flowers of all colors and shapes, suited to the coastal climate. In the center was a small garden table, already set with coffee, milk, and French toast. Everything looked delicious. 

Peter and Mary enjoyed breakfast, chatting about light topics. She asked him about the area, and like a true storyteller, Peter shared the history of the place. She was amazed at how much he knew, he was like a walking encyclopedia, with the charm of a Casanova. It was easy to see why women would fall for

him. He was everything a teenage girl could dream of handsome, tall, well–built, polite, multilingual, and always ready with interesting conversation. His outgoing and friendly personality made him even more appealing. 

“What are you thinking about?” Peter asked, taking a sip of his coffee. 

“Nothing!” She smiled, trying to hide her thoughts. 

Suddenly, he slid a black card across the table toward her. 

“Since we’re going shopping, it’s time for you to start paying the bills. Here you go.” 

“No way! I can’t accept this.” 

“It’s important that you gain some Independence, Mary. I trust you’ll be responsible with your spending, and I won’t end up paying for anything outrageous.” 

“I don’t like carrying these things around. What if I lose it? This card has a lot of money on it, and I don’t want any trouble.” 

“If you lose it, we’ll cancel it. Simple as that.” 

“Okay, but I don’t like it. If you insist, just don’t complain later!” 

“I said, use it responsibly!” Peter replied in a more serious tone. 

“Oh, and one more thing. We need to see a friend of mine for something important. I want to make sure you’re not trapped here.” 

“What do you mean?” 

“We’re going to get you new identification.” 

“What?” 

“Yes! It means I’m giving you a new identity. From now on, you’ll be known as Angela Palmer.” He gazed at her intently. 

“Peter, won’t this get us into trouble?” 

“Don’t worry. It’s not like you’ll be buying houses or anything. But this will help you blend in and move around more freely.” 

“So, I’ll actually be able to go out here?” 

“Exactly. But there are a few things we need to do first” 

“What kind of things?” 

“We’re going to change your look a bit! We have an appointment with my friend later, but first, we’ll get your ID.” 

“Okay!” 

“Now I need to shower and get ready. Hurry up, because I don’t like to be kept waiting.“
