Chapter 0390
“Oh, I see. That’s what’s been on your mind?” Marcus asked gently.
“Yes, back then Catherine forced us to come here. Maximus and I made a pact to get along, and it worked–at least until Alexia arrived,” Valerie said nervously.
“My love, you should’ve told me. We could’ve gone somewhere else,” Marcus said, his expression a mix of concern and frustration.
“No, Marcus. That’s the past, and it needs to stay there,” Valerie said, gazing out at the ocean. “What do you think about sitting here for a while?”
“Of course, my love,” Marcus said, pulling her close in a comforting embrace.
“Marcus,” Valerie began hesitantly, “what have you decided about our stay here? Are you going to change your plan to destroy Palmer Group?”
Marcus sighed. “I’ve thought about not destroying it. After all, it’s part of my grandparents‘ legacy. I don’t want to ruin what they worked so hard to build. Honestly, everything that’s happened has thrown me for a loop–I didn’t see any of this coming.”
“Then what’s your plan?” Valerie asked, her voice curious but gentle.
“I’m still thinking it through. What do you think?”
“I think that if you don’t want to destroy it, you should pull it out of the bankruptcy it’s in and restore it to its former glory. But only if Leonardo and Lucius don’t show up. That pair gives me the creeps. Ever since I met Leonardo, I felt something was off. I didn’t trust him, but he was Peter’s father, and there was nothing I could do.”
“I’ll think about it,” Marcus replied, his tone thoughtful. “Leonardo was a good man at his core, but I think the shock of losing full control of the company still haunts him. Sometimes, I understand his point–I’d probably feel the same way, or worse.”
“That doesn’t justify his actions,” Valerie said sharply, remembering what Leonardo had done to her daughter.
“You’re absolutely right,” Marcus agreed. “We need to think carefully about what to do with that company. Honestly, it wouldn’t take much for me to buy the remaining shares and merge it with my other businesses. But I have no idea what Maximus has in mind.”
“Let’s stop talking about work,” Marcus added after a moment. “We came here to relax, and look at us–still stuck on things we can’t change right now. I’ll deal with it on Monday.”
“You’re right,” Valerie said, smiling softly. “Hey, let’s go grab a coffee. What do you think?”
“Sounds perfect.”
“Marcus,” Valerie began cautiously, “there’s something I haven’t told you. I want to be completely honest with you—I don’t want to hide anything anymore.”
Marcus turned to her, his face filled with concern. In her eyes, he could see a flicker of fear.
“What’s going on?”
“This place has me feeling distracted… or nostalgic,” Valerie admitted. “It’s because this was where I spent my honeymoon with Maximus. It wasn’t anything special–just a few peaceful days. Nothing happened between us… intimately.”
“Valerie, please. Don’t put that image in my mind,” Marcus groaned, running a hand through his hair.
