Chapter 0391
Maximus managed to convince Alden to take him to see what remained of Alexia. A week had passed since the truth had come to light, and neither Maximus nor Marcus had visited the Complex, leaving Matthew Rice in charge once again. Meanwhile, Marcus and Valerie were taking some much–needed time to focus on their relationship after a whirlwind of stressful revelations that had shaken the recently united Bartz family.
Maximus rode alongside Alden. News of Alexia’s death had yet to spread. Her parents had already spoken with Maximus, but he resisted the idea of announcing anything until he fully understood his wife’s condition. He recognized that she deserved everything that had happened to her–and perhaps worse–for all the harm she had caused to the Palmer family and Mary Preston.
“Is she here?” Maximus asked hesitantly.
“Uncle, where else did you think she’d be?” Alden replied with thinly veiled irony.
“I don’t know,” Maximus admitted, his doubt evident.
“Don’t think I’m an animal, and I’m no murderer like her. I’ve told you this once, maybe more I only want her to live,” Alden said, his frustration showing.
“I still don’t understand you,” Maximus replied, his nerves mounting.
“Don’t worry about it, Uncle. Only I need to understand myself.”
“How far do you plan to take this?”
“As far as necessary. My father, my mother, Mary, and my sister–who, by the way, is your daughter–all suffered because of her and her grandfather. Sooner or later, karma catches up. If I have to be the one to deliver it, I have no problem doing so.”
“Alden, you need to think this through. Filling your heart with so much resentment isn’t fair to you,” Maximus said, his voice edged with concern.
“Believe me, Uncle, this is nothing compared to what she deserves. The only thing I’m doing is keeping her alive -not letting her die,” Alden said, staring ahead. “Well, we’re here. Go ahead.”
Maximus stepped out of the elevator into a long corridor leading to the room where Alexia was being kept.
[Alexia’s P.O.V]
I don’t know how many times I’ve tried to get up. Every time I wake, the sound of a machine beeping next to me bip, bip, bip–drives me mad. It’s so relentless that I’d rather drift off to sleep than keep hearing it. I can’t see anything but the white ceiling above me. I try to move my arms, my legs, but nothing happens. I want to scream, but something stops me.
The days feel endless. Slowly, I’m starting to recognize voices–the woman who cares for me, the doctors who check on me. They always tell me I’m strong, that I’ll get through this terrible ordeal. But then they say I –should’ve died. How can they even think to say something like that?
One voice still echoes in my mind–the one I heard the last time I was conscious. For days, I’ve been trying to place it. It’s not a voice I hear often, but it’s eerily familiar. It reminds me of someone who’s long gone. It couldn’t be, though I must be delirious. Lying here for so long with no way to communicate is driving me insane.
The voice reminded me of Peter Palmer. But that’s impossible. His ashes are in the cemetery. I shouldn’t even entertain the thought… yet somehow, it doesn’t matter right now.
Suddenly, I hear the door open. It’s probably just someone coming to change my medication or check on me again.

But then I hear that voice again–this time, younger and more vibrant. Tears fill my eyes, and I feel one slip down. the corner of my cheek.
Then I hear another voice–a voice I know all too well. Maximus. My Maximus is here! He’s come for me! He’s going to take me home. My heart fills with happiness, but it’s short–lived. A cold shiver runs through me when I finally see his face. His expression isn’t one of love or concern–it’s one of pure hatred and contempt.
I know what I did wasn’t a joke, but Leonardo was the one who sought me out first. After that, everything happened so quickly, and I fell in love with him. When my grandfather found out, he saw it as his chance to worm his way back into the Palmer family.
With this accident–well, once my fractures heal, I’ll walk again. Then, I’ll make things right with Maximus. We can still start over. Damn it, we have three children together! He can’t just throw away all these years of marriage.
“Well, Uncle, I’ll give you your space. I’ll wait outside. Don’t do anything foolish,” Alden said, stepping back to let Maximus enter.
Maximus turned to face Alexia, lying motionless on the bed, surrounded by machines and wires.
“Alden was right,” Maximus said, his voice cold. “He won’t let you die. That would be a privilege–one you no longer deserve.”
Alexia’s eyes widened in shock, her gaze locking on Maximus.
