Peter returned home after dropping Ethan off at school. He had a particular fondness for enjoying his coffee in the garden, so when he chose this house, it had to accommodate that need. After arriving, he asked the butler to bring his breakfast to the garden. Meanwhile, Alden was getting ready to leave for the office when Peter’s deep, gravelly voice called out to him: 

“Alden, son, can you come here?” 

“On my way, Dad. Give me a second,” Alden replied, adjusting his briefcase in the entryway. “What’s up?” 

“What are you planning to do with Alexia?” 

“Dad, you’re not supposed to get involved in that.” 

“I’m your father, and I’m not stupid. What are you going to do with her? She can’t stay in the hospital forever.” 

“Well, I’ve thought it through. As soon as she shows some improvement, I’ll move her to the Swiss Alps. I’ll hire someone to care for her until the end of her days.” 

“That sounds like a lot of things to organize…” 

“It’s simple. The hardest part was getting Maximus’s permission, and now I have it. He’s planning to announce her death this week.” 

“Is he really going to do it?” 

“Yes, or at least, that’s what he said.” 

“Be careful, Alden. Maximus isn’t exactly an open book. You need to stay ahead of him.” 

“Relax, Dad. I always have an ace up my sleeve. Stay positive.” 

After their brief exchange, Alden cheekily stole a piece of Peter’s French toast, popping it into his mouth and swallowing it whole. 

“Alden, sit down and have breakfast properly before heading out.” 

“Sorry, Dad, can’t. I’ve got something urgent to discuss with Maximus.” 

As Theodore strolled into the garden, he caught the mention of Maximus’s name. 

“Your son is already tangled up with that man?” Theodore asked, raising an eyebrow. 

“What can I do? He’s curious and wants to learn about my past. But I don’t trust Maximus, not one bit. Do me a favor and dig into him. I want to know everything about my brother.” 

“Of course. But let me eat first… Hey, how did Ethan seem at his new school? Do you like it?” 

“It looks like a good place. We’ll see what he has to say about it later.” 

“That kid’s the apple of your eye. I often wonder how you’d be if you had more children.” 

“I’d lose my mind, that’s what. Look at me with just one. Imagine if I had several–no, thank you.” 

“Peter, have you ever thought about the future? About getting married again or finding a girlfriend? You know, normal people things?” 

“I am normal. And no, I don’t want another woman in my life. I had two, and neither stayed. Why should I tie myself down to anyone now?”
