Chapter 0041
Peter arrived at Philip’s clinic, swiftly getting out of the car and open the passenger door for Mary. He gently took her hand and led her Inside.
“Philip, we’re here. Please, help me check on Angela, “Peter said.
“Peter, Angela… Come in, come in,” Philip responded gesturing towards an examination table. ” help her up. We need to examine you, Angela.”
“Peter,
Mary, now known as Angela, knew that Philip only called her by that name because of the arrangement with Peter. The name tugged at her emotions, and before she could stop it, tears started flowing. Peter pulled her into a comforting embrace, but the familiar scent of his cologne only made her cry harder, reminding her of everything that had happened.
“What’s wrong, sweetheart? You need to calm down se Philip can examine you. I’m worried about that head injury,” Peter said softly.
Mary tried to steady her breathing, wiping her eyes with her hands. “I’m sorry… I didn’t mean to cause trouble. I didn’t know what else to do.”
‘Angela, none of this is your fault. Maximus is the one who’s messed up. You’re a wonderful woman, and you never should’ve been caught in his path.”
Meanwhile, several miles away, Maximus woke up, groggy and exhausted. Even though he had slept, his rest felt hollow. His mind was haunted by the image of Mary falling after he slapped her, hitting her head on the table. The memory played on a loop, gnawing at him. He reached for his phone on the nightstand, realizing it was off. He turned it on and was greeted with 15 missed calls from Emma. His heart raced as he immediately thought of Mary.
“Emma, what’s going on? You called me so many times!” he asked impatiently, dreading the answer.
“Sir! I’ve been trying to reach you since it happened, but I couldn’t get through, so I contacted. Matthew,” Emma explained, her voice shaky.
“Stop with the riddles, Emma. What happened?” Maximus demanded.
“Miss Mary… she ran away, and I didn’t see who helped her. I only saw her get into a black car.”
“What?! Weren’t you supposed to be watching her?” he roared.
“I know, sir! I know! But she ran, and someone helped her escape. I’ve been trying to call you ever since, but I couldn’t reach you. Matthew is already on it.”
“Alright. I’ll talk to Matthew. Stay at the mansion and keep your phone on in case she tries to return.” “Yes, sir! I haven’t left, and I’ve only told your grandmother that Mary is sleeping-

After hanging up, Maximus felt a crushing weight descend on him. His weariness vanished, replaced by fury and worry.
“Matthew, I just spoke to Emma. Any news?”
“Yes, sir, but I’m afraid you won’t like what I found.”

“Just tell me,” Maximus snapped.
“I checked the security footage. Someone did help her
“Who?” Maximus growled, his frustration growing.
“Your brother, Peter. He took her. I traced the car as far as I could, but there are no cameras beyond at certain point, so we’ve lost track of them.”
“Keep searching!” Maximus yelled, slamming the phone down. “Damn you, Peter! You can’t stand the fact that she chose me, can you?” he muttered to himself, rage boiling over.
Throwing on his jacket, he was about to storm out of the room when Alexia entered.
“Darling, where are you going? You were supposed to stay with me,” she said, eyeing him suspiciously.
“I’m sorry, Alexia. Something’s happened at the mansion, and I need to go back.”
“There’s something I need to make clear to you–never touch my phone again. I noticed it was off, and I missed important calls because of it,” Maximus added his voice cold.
‘I only turned it off because you looked exhausted. I wanted you to rest,” Alexia replied, gripping his arm as he tried to leave.
“Let go, Alexia! Things have gotten complicated, and need to handle it before my grandmother finds out.”
