After Peter left the room where Alexia lay resting, she opened her eyes. Her gaze wandered to the landscape outside, losing herself in the view before her. She felt nothing–her body was lifeless, only her lips and eyes able to move. “What’s the point of living like this? I’m nothing but a useless piece of trash now,‘ she thought bitterly.
Her grim musings were interrupted by Eliya, who entered once again, carrying a tray of hot food.
“Madam, I’ve brought your meal. The gentleman asked me to take very good care of you,” Eliya said gently.
“I don’t want anything!” Alexia snapped.
“Please, madam, don’t make my job harder than it already is. Can’t you see how much your husband loves you?
“That man isn’t my husband!”
“Madam, I understand your frustration with your condition, but the gentleman has cared for you tirelessly. He’s gone to great lengths, spending a small fortune to make sure you’re comfortable here. This place might not be what you’re used to, but ask yourself–if he weren’t your husband, why would he go to such lengths?”
“Why?” Alexia sneered. “I’ll tell you why. That bastard doesn’t want me to die. Eliya, help me. Kill me. Please! I don’t want to live like this. Look at me! Do you think this is a life?”
“Madam, you know very well I would never do what you’re asking. As long as Mr. Palmer pays me, I will take the best possible care of you. Understand this: never, and I mean never, will I harm you.”
Alexia’s eyes filled with tears. ‘How the hell can anyone think this is a life worth living?” she thought, her despair consuming her.
“Madam, come on. Let’s eat. Look, I made you a delicious mushroom soup. It’s exquisite and will warm you up. You know how important it is to keep your temperature stable.”
“Stop spouting nonsense! What I want is to die, so you won’t make me eat a thing.”
“Madam, if you refuse to eat, I’ll have to give you an IV. But rest assured, I won’t let you deteriorate. You have my word ”
Alexia understood perfectly that all this care Eliya was giving her was orchestrated by Peter. He would never let her die. For most people, this would seem like an extraordinary display of love and devotion, but Alexia knew better. She was all too aware of the true intentions behind bis so–called care.
“Fine, Eliya… you win for today. Feed me. What did he say?”
“That’s more like it, madam. He just asked me to take care of you. It’s clear he loves you–he told me there’s nothing he wouldn’t do to keep you alive,” Eliya replied with a hopeful tone.
To Alexia, those words were nothing more than the cruelest form of revenge. Peter’s elaborate care was his way of punishing her for everything she had done. After all, her family, friends, and everyone she’d ever known believed
she was dead.
Eliya couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy. The woman he cared for had a remarkable husband. What he couldn’t understand was why she held so much contempt for him. It was obvious Peter was doing everything to ensure her comfort, sparing no expense on her medications and therapies. Surely, Alexia had to be depressed not to see the love that was so evident to everyone else.
But Alexia was trapped in her own delusion, one Peter preferred not to dispel. He let Eliya believe that all the care and attention were motivated by love rather than revenge. Otherwise, Peter wasn’t sure if Eliya would be willing- or feel comfortable–being part of such a twisted arrangement.
