“What about Valerie’s shares?” Frederick asked, leaning back in his chair. “Maximus signed the paperwork to transfer them to you, but he left it to you to handle the protocols. From what I can see, you haven’t done much with them yet. Why is that?” 

Marcus sighed deeply. “I haven’t brought it up with Valerie because it’s still a sensitive topic for her. Everything about this place reminds her of Peter’s death. At first, we were ready to dissolve the company completely, but look at us now–trying to bring it back from its decline. It’s kept my head busy. But I’ll talk to her about it tonight at home.” 

Frederick nodded. “And how are you planning to manage Valerie’s pregnancy and your responsibilities here at the company?” 

Marcus ran a hand through his hair, thinking aloud. “I’ve got three options. First, there’s Alden. He’s a legitimate Palmer, and ideally, the CEO should carry the family name Second, there’s Serenity. While she’s legally my daughter, she’s also a Palmer by blood–and a Bartz. She could take the role, but her knowledge is still limited and mostly theoretical. She’s still studying. Lastly, there’s Laura. She’s about to turn eighteen, but I’m certain Maximus wouldn’t let her take on the role. She’s still too young and, from what I’ve seen, far too innocent for the cutthroat world of business.” 

“So that leaves Alden as the only viable option?” 

“Exactly. And honestly, I think he’s ready. He has a lot of Peter’s character. When I watch him, I see traces of his father–his decisiveness, his calm in a crisis, his commitment to this company.” 

“I think you should talk to Maximus first, and then make the offer to Alden. I doubt Maximus would object. In fact, it might even feel like honoring Peter’s legacy.”

Marcus chuckled. “It’s a bit ironic, isn’t it? Remember when I first found out I had shares in this company? Catherine wanted me to take over as CEO. She trusted me more than her own sons and grandsons. I suggested Peter instead, but he didn’t want the weight of that responsibility. Now I see his son, and for Alden, this role seems like his greatest ambition. Sometimes, I feel nostalgic watching how he handles the company’s finances.” 

Frederick smiled. “I feel the same way. Whenever he comes to me for advice, I see a glimpse of Peter. There’s no doubt that the next generation of Palmers and Bartzs is catching up to us.” 

“Don’t forget Valerie. Serenity might be a Bartz legally, but her true family name is Preston.” 

“Fair point. So, have you thought about what to do with all these young ones?” 

“Absolutely. I’ve been considering bringing Serenity and Laura into the company, giving them real experience here. Serenity has the knowledge but needs hands–on exposure. Laura has neither, but she’ll learn. She’s a Palmer by blood–this should come naturally to her.”
