Chapter 0428
“After a little over three years, my money had dwindled so much that I couldn’t afford to stay in that damned house anymore. So, I returned to Valentia. That’s when I asked my granddaughter for help. She didn’t want me back at Palmer Group, but you know me, Marcus.
“I can be very persuasive. I got back in through the front door, earned Maximus’s trust, and that idiot handed me significant power once again. But in a careless moment, they discovered I’d been stealing from him.
“With the money I’d managed to siphon off, I planned to leave, to start over somewhere far away. But as if someone had read my thoughts, that very night, while I was sleeping, I felt a presence near me. Instinctively, I opened my eyes, and that was the last thing I ever saw. Peter was standing there. His face was blank, devoid of emotion. He simply stared at me and said: Hello, Frank
“Then everything went dark, blurry, and excruciatingly painful. He threw sulfuric acid at me. In my desperation, I grabbed my sheets to wipe it off, but the damned fabric stuck to my face, making the pain unbearable. My screams must have alerted Theodore–or so I thought. When he came in, instead of helping me, I heard his wretched voice say, “It’s done. Does that make you feel better?” And Peter replied, “No. He needs to suffer more. Take him to the dump and throw him in with the filth. Then, I’ll feel better
“After that, I don’t know what happened. When I woke up, was in a mobile clinic for the homeless. Can you believe it? The once–famous Judge Frank Levett, lying in a pit of filth. I tried to explain who I was, to tell them my name, but no one understood me. No one cared. Eventually, I ended up living on the streets, blind and begging for scraps or coins from strangers–until you found me.
“It’s obvious who took my money. It’s clear Theodore helped Peter. And it’s undeniable–Peter didn’t die. My eyes saw him, Marcus.”
Marcus stood there, his mind reeling, as Frank clenched his fists in frustration. The weight of what Frederick had told him earlier pressed on his chest. ‘The investigation needed to happen immediately.‘
“Frank,” Marcus finally said, his voice cold. “Today’s your lucky day. You won’t die. But I think this will be the last time you ever hear from me. I wish you a long life.”
“No, Marcus, I want to die. Kill me! End it now! Let me die This isn’t a life. Damn it, Marcus, just let me die!” Frank screamed, his voice raw and full of anguish.
“No, my
my old friend. You’ll live. You’ll live until your body can’t anymore. And thank you for the information you’ve just given me.”
Leaving Frank behind, Marcus stormed out of the nursing home and sped off toward Westhaven. His chest felt tight, and he was consumed by an overwhelming need to hold his wife. His mind raced with confusion, doubts swirling like a storm.
“This can’t be. I saw his body. My friend would’ve sought us out. He can’t be alive.‘
