Maximus returned to his wife’s room, noticing she was still peacefully asleep. One of her bandages had a
bloodstain.
“One of the wounds reopened, but it’s just a small stitch on the edge, nothing to worry about,” said a nurse who hadn’t been present for the earlier incident “She’ll sleep soundly for at least two hours. You might want to go home or call someone to take your place. You look exhausted; you’ve been here for days.”
“You’re right. Besides, it doesn’t matter if I’m here or not. I’m the reason she’s like this, and when she wakes up, she won’t be happy to see me.”
“Don’t say that. Whatever issues you two had can’t be that big. Sometimes we make mountains out of molehills, but time reveals the truth. If you love her, I’m sure you’ll find a way to fix
“That’s the problem. There’s no fixing this. She wants a divorce, and maybe the best thing is to give it to her. I’ve hurt her too much, and I don’t want her to try to end her life again.”
“Well, if there’s no other way, what can you do? I’d still go for reconciliation, but if you’re sure there’s no other path, maybe it’s for the best. But who am I to interfere? I’ll leave you with your wife. Let me know if you need anything.”
Maximus approached his wife, gently stroking her face before kissing her cheek–something he hadn’t done in a long time. He felt the weight of guilt, knowing that much of what was happening was his fault. He couldn’t escape that. After standing by her side for a few minutes, he left the room and headed back to the mansion, but not before asking the nurses to keep an eye on Mary.
“Miss?”
“Yes, sir?” replied the same nurse from earlier.
“I’m leaving. You’re right; I need to get someone to relieve me. I’m too tired to think clearly. Please check on her while I’m gone.”
“Of course! Don’t worry, we’ll keep a close watch on her.”
Maximus left for the mansion. He had been at the hospital for several days. Matthew was handling the company while he was away, and as for Alexia, she was fuming. She never imagined that one message would cause so many problems. Instead of driving the couple apart, it made Maximus even more
attentive to his wife.
“Matthew?”
“Yes, sir?”
“Do we have anything pending today?”
“A few meetings, but don’t worry, everything’s under control. Most of the staff think you’re on a business trip, so they haven’t been trying to reach you How’s your wife?”
“She’s fine, Matthew. Thanks for asking. I’ll be back at the office later today. Emma is going to take care

of Mary, so I need to get back to work.”
“Are you sure? Maybe you should wait until your wife back horne.”
“No, it’s better if I’m not there.” Maximus was trying to convince himself that this was for the best.
“Alright, sir. I’ll be here when you get back.”
