It had been nine months since Mary left the mansion in that time, Maximus’s grandmother had stopped attending the monthly meetings, but she hadn’t caused any problems. Alexia, using her skills, had become indispensable to Maximus. She was an admirable woman, slowly earning the respect of her colleagues. Maximus even trusted her with small projects.
On the personal side, Maximus and Alexia had a seemingly perfect relationship. It was no secret within the company that they were dating, and they were seen as an admirable couple. Everyone predicted a wedding was on the horizon.
Meanwhile, far from central Valeria, in Galea, Mary–How called Angela–was living a completely different life from the one she had with Maximus.
Angela worked nights at a café–bar as a waitress. On Fridays, she played guitar and sang in a rock band. She had pink hair and dressed more in line with her age. Although Peter had initially been unsure about her job, she was happy and excited. In the mornings, she took painting and artistic drawing courses and trained with a well–known tailor in the area.
She had built a life there. Peter looked after her but was more laid–back than anyone else in her life. He had given her a black credit card with enough money to live comfortably, but she refused to use it, preferring to work instead. Without a completed education, office jobs weren’t an option, and although Peter had offered her a position in one of his companies, she declined.
It was April 23rd, and Maximus woke up in Alexia’s apartment. She knew very well it was his grandmother Catherine’s birthday.
“Maximus, are you sure I can’t go to the dinner tonight?”
“Love, I’m completely sure. You know Grandma doesn’t think highly of you. I’d rather not put you through that.”
“Maybe if I talk to her, she’ll soften up and accept me
“You don’t know my grandma. She can be very rude if she wants, and she wouldn’t care even if the president himself were there. I don’t want to risk you being humiliated.”
“I understand. I was just hoping I’d get the chance to meet her.”
“Don’t worry. You will in time. Anyway, I’ve got to go. I’m having lunch with a potential client, and I’ll probably assign the project to you.”
“Okay, love! Trust me, I’m here to support you.
Maximus left for the mansion before heading to his business meeting. He was in a particularly good mood, knowing that today, of all days, he might see Mary again. He assumed she wouldn’t miss this event since she had skipped others, but this one had no excuse.

“Peter, how do I look?” Mary asked, twirling in front of the mirror.
“You look stunning, miss! I’m glad you listened to me and dyed your hair back to a more natural color.”
“It looked good before, too.”
“It was P–1–N–K!”
“I know!”
