Celeste, still dressed in her elegant gown, was preparing coffee in the small kitchen while Peter waited in the cozy living room. Spike, her old and wise cat, noticed the presence of a stranger in their home. Emerging from the bedroom, the feline approached Peter with a watchful gaze. With slow, deliberate movements, Spike jumped onto the couch and studied the man intently. 

Peter observed the cat’s behavior with a faint smile. He had never considered having a cat before–not because he disliked them, but because his life was too busy to care for a pet properly. If he now had Chester, it was entirely for Ethan’s sake. As much as he loved animals, he knew his schedule wouldn’t allow him to give them the attention they needed. Yet, as Spike settled near him and began purring, Peter couldn’t resist reaching out to gently pet the cat. 

Spike, clearly won over, shifted positions and nestled himself into Peter’s lap. As the cat kneaded his legs, Peter absentmindedly stroked Spike’s fur, finding a strange sense of calm in the moment. 

When Celeste entered the room with two mugs of coffee, she paused, surprised by the sight. 

“Wow! Spike really likes you,” she said with a smile. “He’s usually so standoffish with strangers. I’m the only one he lets near him.” 

“Well, I guess he’s made an exception. Looks like I’ve got a new friend,” Peter said, continuing to pet Spike. “I liked cats as a kid.” 

“Really?” 

“Yes. My brother and I wanted a dog and a cat, but we weren’t allowed to have either at the time.” 

Peter fell silent for a moment, his brow furrowing slightly. The memory had surfaced unexpectedly, and it felt oddly vivid, as though it had always been there. 

“Peter? Are you okay?” Celeste asked, her soft voice pulling him from his thoughts. 

“What?” 

“I asked if you were okay. You went quiet all of a sudden.” 

“Oh, yes. I’m fine. Don’t worry about it.” He smiled briefly. “I think I’ll take you up on your offer and stay here for a few hours. Just until sunrise.” 

“I brought coffee, but if you’d rather rest, fran set up my room for you. I’ll sleep on the couch,” Celeste offered. 

“No way! I’ll sleep here if I need to. You’re not giving up your bed for me.” 

“Have you seen the size of this couch? You wouldn’t fit. I’ve slept on it tons of times after late–night movies. I’m used to it.” 

“I’ll take the coffee for now. We’ll figure out the rest later, Peter replied with a reassuring nod. 

Though she hesitated, Celeste handed him the mug and sat down beside him. 

“I’m surprised, Spike,” she said, looking at her cat, now fully sprawled across Peter’s lap. “You’re never like this. You’re such a ‘traitor cat.‘

“Maybe…” 

“So, Celeste, this charming apartment–do you own it?”

“No, I rent it. The furniture and Spike are the only things that are really mine. I’ve been adding bits and pieces over time. It’s starting to feel more complete, don’t you think?” 

“It definitely has your touch.” 

Celeste glanced at him, noting how relaxed he seemed, sipping his coffee with one hand while petting Spike with the other.
