Marcus let go of Peter, staring at him, searching for that same flicker of familiarity he’d seen moments before. But it was gone he couldn’t find it again. Left with no choice but to accept things as they were, he headed for the door and said:
“Peter, I never wanted… I never wanted this to happen.”
“I know, my friend. You don’t need to explain any further. Go in peace. I’m at peace, and you should be too.” Marcus gave him a faint smile and left the study. He quickly exited the house and got into his car, driving with no destination in mind. He just needed to get out of there; the place felt suffocating. He sped down the highway, far above the speed limit. A sudden wave of nausea hit him, forging him to pull over. He vomited everything his empty stomach didn’t have, then grabbed a water bottle from the car, rinsed his mouth, and got back in.
He pulled out his phone and called Frederick.
“Frederick, can I see you?”
“From the sound of your voice, things didn’t go well. I told you not to go alone.”
“It’s not that… I just need someone to talk to. Please, meet me at the overlook. I can’t go home like this.” “Don’t worry. I’ll see you there in fifteen minutes.”
Marcus arrived much earlier and sat staring at the documents from the investigation he’d commissioned. The truth had been staring him in the face the whole time, and he hadn’t seen it. ‘How was that even possible?‘ he thought.
He pulled a cigar from his coat and lit it, puffing away as the minutes passed. By the time Frederick arrived, Marcus was leaning against the hood of his car, his cigar nearly finished.
“Judging by your face, it didn’t go well…” Frederick said as he approached.
“The truth was always there. Peter was always there…” Marcus replied, his face pale.
