Mary took out her phone, imlocked it, and scrolled through her photo gallery. She handed the phone to 

Maximus. 

“Look, this is my life in Galea.” 

“So, you’re living in Galea?” 

“Yes! It’s a great place to live. Peter has a house by the sea, and in the mornings, I like to go for walks or runs along the shore. Then I come back and have breakfast with Peter. We always make time for that- it’s our only chance to see each other during the day. 

“Wow. Sounds like you’re living a pretty interesting life over there.” 

“Yeah, I like it a lot. But I also enjoyed living with you guys.” 

As Maximus listened to the beautiful young woman beside him, he couldn’t help the jealousy that coursed through his veins whenever he saw pictures of her and Peter. In some, she was alone, but it was obvious who had taken the photos. There was something between them–he couldn’t quite describe what, but it was undeniable. 

“Mary, you and Peter seem to get along very well.” 

“I suppose! We’ve been living together for nine months now, so that builds a good relationship, though sometimes…” 

Mary was about to bring something up but decided to hold back. 

“Well, you know your brother. Peter is Peter, so there’s not much else to say.” 

“Has he ever hurt you? Has he done anything to upset you? Tell me.” 

“No, no! How could you think that? It’s just that he’s a bit absent–minded, like tonight.”

“Hmm, no. He’s never been like that with me. He’s just a little careless and forgets that he has a cousin.” 

Maximus looked at the woman in front of him. He felt so comfortable around her that he lost track of time until Grandma interrupted them. 

“My dears, I’ve been looking for you! Look what a beautiful couple you make! I wish you two were together. But anyway, what are you doing out here? And where’s Peter?” 

“I don’t know, Grandma. I’ve been looking for him, but it seems like he’s already left.” 

“Grandma, Mary is tired, and it seems like my brother isn’t coming back. I offered to find her a place to stay here so she can rest, but she’s still waiting for Peter.” 

Catherine knew her grandson well, too. She had hoped that with Mary there, Peter would behave, but it seemed like he hadn’t. Unfortunately, Peter had given in to his old habits and abandoned Mary. 

“Oh, darling, I’m so sorry. But the night’s not over yet and I still have many guests to speak with. Wait for me, and we’ll go back to the mansion together.”
