Maximus arrived at the dinner alone, as usual. As the president of Palmer Group, he was always seen as the imposing businessman who kept his personal life separate. Everyone knew he had a girlfriend, but it raised eyebrows when he showed up in his Ferrari by himself. He passed through the red carpet without lingering for extra photos and entered the ballroom, where his heart skipped a beat when he saw the enchanting face of the woman who had left without saying goodbye. 

“Good evening, Grandma.‘ 

“Maximus, dear! Let’s forget our differences tonight and have dinner as a family,” Catherine said with a big smile. “Go say hello to your brother and Angela. Don’t you remember her?” 

“Angela?” 

“Yes, she’s your very distant cousin. She came with your brother. They make such a lovely couple, don’t they?” 

“Peter… Angela, good evening,” Maximus said, tilting his head slightly and making an effort to be polite to his brother. 

After that brief exchange, the dinner went smoothly, Grandma made a toast and then opened the dance floor, starting with a dance with Maximus. For that night, their rivalry was on pause, and both seemed in good spirits. 

Meanwhile, Peter was looking for the right moment to talk to Angela. He invited her to dance, and for a few minutes, the spotlight was on them. Maximus couldn’t help but feel a knot in his stomach as he watched them dance. He couldn’t explain what he was feeling, but seeing them together made him uncomfortable. 

That night, Maximus downed several whiskeys, trying to numb the emotions swirling inside him as he watched Peter holding Mary’s hand. He had to admit that the sight made his nerves raw. A few hours later, Mary, looking tired and a little irritated, bumped into Maximus, spilling his drink. 

Without thinking twice, she turned to apologize. 

“Maximus, I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to spill your drink, let alone stain your clothes!” 

“Well, now I know who’s paying for the dry cleaning. 

“Don’t worry, I’ll pay for it!” 

“Where’s your date?” 

Mary’s worried expression shifted to one of annoyance, her tone of voice changing too. 

“I don’t know. He probably left with one of the girls who’ve been hanging around him all night.” 

“Are you jealous, Miss “Angela“?” 

“No! No! It’s just that I’m tired, and I wanted to leave, but I can’t find him.

“If you’d like, I can take you to wherever you’re staying.” 

“Don’t worry. We’re not staying in a hotel. Peter has an apartment here, but he didn’t give me the address. Honestly, I’m just tired and want to sleep.”
