Peter rose from the bed, leaving Alexia frozen in place, her mind reeling from what she had just seen and heard. The images Peter had shown her spoke volumes–of all the people who could have sought vengeance for her actions, she had fallen into the hands of the worst possible person. The Peter she remembered the friendly, warm sixteen–year–old boy–was long gone. In his place stood her tormentor, someone unrecognizable, a man who wielded her life like a weapon. She knew she was utterly at his mercy, and he would never let her forget it. “Mrs. Palmer, it’s good to see you awake!” Dr. Stephenson greeted her with practiced cheer. “The last few times I’ve visited, you’ve been asleep. Let’s take a look and see what’s going on. I’m going to touch you now, 

alright?” 

Alexia remained silent, her mind fixated on whether she could recover. She clung to the hope that if she could move her fingers and wrist, she might regain more mobility. What else could she do? She had all the time in the world to force herself to heal. 

“What’s your assessment, Doctor?” Peter asked, his tone neutral but laced with curiosity. 

The doctor sighed and cleared his throat. “Mr. and Mrs. Palmer, unfortunately, there is no definitive cure for spinal cord injuries. While experimental treatments with stem cells and robotic structures show promise, nothing can currently restore full mobility, Incomplete spinal injuries can allow for some recovery, but they rarely lead to full recovery. Over time, she might regain some movement in her upper extremities, but we cannot promise more than that.” 

Hearing this, Alexia felt as though a bucket of ice water had been dumped over her. She had been clinging to her progress the movement in her hand–as proof she could heal. Her frustration boiled over, and tears streamed down her face as the weight of reality crushed her hope. 

“Mrs. Palmer, I know this is difficult to hear,” the doctor continued, his voice gentle. “But I don’t want to give you false hope. Your progress is remarkable, but it doesn’t guarantee anything beyond partial improvement. Some patients do regain partial function, but a full recovery remains rare.” 

Alexia sobbed openly now, her body trembling. Her plan to use her recovery as leverage was crumbling. She felt trapped, helpless, just as she had after her accident. 

Peter observed her reaction and approached, taking her hand in his “Dr. Stephenson, I think that’s enough for today. We understand the situation now. We’ll focus on helping her improve day by day.” 

“There are therapies we can try,” the doctor offered. “You both can decide how to proceed.” 

“We’ll discuss it,” Peter said curtly. “For now, we needed clarity about her condition.” 

After a few additional checks, the doctor left the house. Alexia remained in bed, overwhelmed by despair. Her life felt over, 

her hope extinguished. She stared blankly at the ceiling, tears pooling in her blue eyes 

“You understand now, don’t you?” Peter said coldly, brealong the silence. “Moving your hand doesn’t mean you’ll regain full mobility. Is that finally sinking in? 

“Get out!” Alexia screamed. “I don’t need your mockery!” 

“I’m not mocking you,” Peter replied, his voice calm but cutting, “I’m reminding you of your reality. Don’t forget who’s keeping you alive.” 

“Get the fuck out!” Alexia’s voice cracked with desperation 

Peter left the room and walked to the kitchen. Even from there, he could hear her sobs echoing down the hall. He sighed, relieved that the situation hadn’t spiraled out of control. She now understood her place, and there was no

A few hours later, Peter returned to Alexia’s room with a tray of food. She was asleep but burning with fever. He administered medication and stayed by her side until her temperature stabilized. When she finally awoke, drenched in sweat, Peter had to change her clothes. As he did, he noticed how much weight she had lost–her body was frail and weakened. Alexia seemed lost in a trance, her earlier defiance extinguished. 

“Why are you doing this?” Alexia asked, her voice barely above a whisper. 

“I’m not a monster, Alexia,” Peter replied. “If the roles were reversed, and you were in my place, you wouldn’t have spared me. But I’m not a killer by nature. Do you really think this isn’t the best revenge?”
